Klein Tools BL6 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What sizes do the Klein Tools L-style ball-end hex keys come in?
Klein's L-style ball-end hex keys are sold individually across twelve inch sizes: 1/16, 5/64, 3/32, 7/64, 1/8, 9/64, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 inch. The part number tracks the size in 64ths, so BL4 is 1/16 inch, BL8 is 1/8 inch, BL16 is 1/4 inch and BL24 is 3/8 inch. All are inch (SAE) sizes, not metric.
2) Can I use a ball-end hex key on a fastener I can't reach straight on?
That is what the ball end is for. The ball end on these Klein L-style keys works at angles up to 25 degrees off the axis of the screw, so you can get into a recessed setscrew or a fastener blocked by a housing without lining up square to it. Keep in mind the ball end carries less torque contact than the flat end, so break loose a tight fastener with the straight end and use the ball end for run-down.
3) Are these Klein hex keys safe to use on live electrical work?
No. Klein states plainly that these ball-end hex keys are NOT insulated and will not protect against electrical shock. For work on energized equipment you need a 1000V insulated tool, not this one. De-energize and verify before using these on any electrical enclosure, and wear approved eye protection.
4) What is the difference between the short leg and the long leg on an L-style hex key?
Two different jobs. On these Klein keys the short side is meant for higher torque situations and for low clearance, since you grip the long leg as the lever arm. The long side reaches down into deep or hard-to-get-at fastener locations where the short leg won't bottom out. Most panel and setscrew work uses both ends of the same key.
5) Will these hex keys strip out soft socket-head screws?
Klein builds these to resist that. The keys are made of top-grade alloy steel and heat treated, and the profile is designed to prevent stripping of sockets, so the corners hold their shape instead of rounding over the first time you lean on them. One warning from Klein: do not slip a pipe or other extension over the key to gain leverage. That is how you twist a key off in a socket.
6) Do I need metric or inch hex keys for my equipment, and which do these cover?
These Klein BL-series ball-end keys are inch (SAE) only, from 1/16 up to 3/8 inch. If you are working on imported HVAC equipment, European-made panel hardware, or machinery built to metric fasteners, an inch key will feel close on some sizes but will round the socket. Match the standard on the fastener first; for inch setscrews, pulleys, couplings and US-made panel hardware, this range covers it.
7) Are Klein ball-end hex keys made in the USA?
Yes. Klein lists these L-style ball-end hex keys as Made in USA, from top-grade alloy steel. That matters on public and institutional jobs carrying domestic-sourcing requirements on tools and materials.
8) Which hex key sizes should I stock for general electrical and MRO work?
For panel boards, lugs, setscrew connectors and motor couplings, the working band is usually 1/8 (BL8), 5/32 (BL10), 3/16 (BL12), 7/32 (BL14) and 1/4 inch (BL16). Small instrument and control work drops to 1/16 (BL4), 5/64 (BL5), 3/32 (BL6), 7/64 (BL7) and 9/64 inch (BL9). Larger bus and mechanical hardware takes 5/16 (BL20) and 3/8 inch (BL24). Since these are sold as individual keys, you can build the sizes your fleet actually uses rather than buying a full set.
