Padlock 20 Diskus®

It all comes down to form: With this DISKUS® padlock with all-round protection, ABUS Plus cylinder, and cylinder cover, you protect your valuables not only against theft, but also against dirt and splashing water.

  • The original ABUS Diskus® – stainless steel interior and exterior
  • 360-degree all-round protection
  • ABUS Plus disc cylinder

TRUST THE ORIGINAL

Our Diskus® 20 padlock has proven its worth in securing very high-value items or objects at very high risk of theft.

The round design with narrow shackle opening and the welding seam ensure solid safety! The Diskus® 20 padlock protects your valuables stored in trucks or vans or behind factory gates, for example. The lock is made of stainless steel inside and out, and the shackle is made of special hardened steel, which makes it particularly resistant to picking. The seam that holds the two stainless steel housing pieces together is also hand-welded on the Diskus® 20, which ships from our production facility in Germany. This means that the two halves cannot be easily broken apart and the Diskus® secures your valuables and items very well. Tip: Combine the Diskus® 20 with the matching hasp 140.

ABUS 20/70-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an ABUS 20/70 Diskus padlock fit my hasp opening?
Check two numbers before you order. The 20/70 gives 25/32 inch of horizontal shackle clearance and 43/64 inch of vertical clearance, with a 25/64 inch shackle. That narrow opening is the whole point of the Diskus design, but it also means a heavy staple or a thick chain link will not pass through. Measure the staple on your hasp or the link on your chain against those figures. ABUS builds the 140 hasp specifically to pair with the Diskus 20, and that combination leaves almost nothing of the shackle exposed to attack.
2) Can I get ABUS 20/70 Diskus padlocks all keyed to the same key for a whole site?
Yes. The 20/70 is sold keyed alike, so one key runs every lock you order that way, and keyed different if each opening needs its own key. Keyed alike is the usual pick for a property manager or a facilities crew handing one key to a maintenance tech who has to open twenty gates. Keyed different suits tenant storage or anywhere separate parties each control their own lock. The ABUS Plus disc cylinder carries a very high number of key differs, so a keyed different order stays genuinely distinct across a large set.
3) What is the difference between a Diskus round padlock and a standard rectangular shackle padlock?
Shape drives the security. A conventional padlock leaves a squared shackle standing proud of the body where bolt cutters or a pry bar can get a bite. The Diskus wraps the shackle inside a round stainless housing, 360 degrees of coverage, with only a narrow slot open. Its two housing halves are joined by a hand welded seam so they cannot be split apart. The trade off is the narrow opening: a conventional padlock like the Sargent 758 with its standard body will pass a fatter staple or chain, where the Diskus will not. Pick the Diskus when the target is high value or high risk and you can size the hasp to it.
4) My chain link will not fit the ABUS Diskus 20/70 shackle. What padlock should I use instead?
With only 25/32 inch of horizontal and 43/64 inch of vertical clearance, the Diskus 20/70 is not a chain lock, and forcing the issue means buying a lighter chain than the job wants. Go to a conventional open shackle padlock instead: the Sargent 758 key retaining or the Sargent 858 non key retaining, both standard body locks, or the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle. Measure the inside of your chain link first and match the shackle to it.
5) I need a padlock that keys into an existing Medeco or Sargent master key system - what do I use instead of the ABUS 20/70?
The ABUS 20/70 Diskus uses the ABUS Plus disc cylinder, which is its own key system and will not accept another manufacturer's cylinder. To fold the padlock into an existing system, use a peer built around a conventional cylinder instead. The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, so it takes the same core family already running the facility. The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in satin chrome. The Sargent 82-856 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a 2 by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle on the KESO system. Choose by whichever system the rest of the site already runs.
6) What is the closest stainless steel alternative to the ABUS 20/70 Diskus padlock for an outdoor gate?
The Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock is the nearest peer in construction terms: it uses a solid stainless steel body, the same corrosion approach as the ABUS 20/70 Diskus, which is stainless steel inside and out with a cylinder cover against dirt and splashing water. The two differ in shape and in how the shackle is protected. The 20/70 uses the round Diskus body with a narrow shackle opening for 360-degree all-round protection, while the Medeco 521 G8R is a conventional-bodied weather-tight lock and is supplied less its pop-out cylinder, so the cylinder is specified separately. If the opening already carries an ABUS Diskus hasp 140, stay with the 20/70, whose shackle geometry is built for that hasp.
7) The ABUS 20/70 keeps the key trapped until the lock is closed - what padlock does not do that?
The 20/70 Diskus is key retaining: the key is needed for locking and the lock holds the key until it is locked, which stops a gate being left hanging open. Where crews need to pocket the key with the lock open, use a non-key-retaining peer. The Sargent 858 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in US4 satin brass, and the Sargent 82-856 is non-key retaining with a 2 by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle. The Medeco 54515G XT is also non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter. Sargent's 758 goes the other way and is key retaining like the ABUS, in a US4 satin brass finish.
8) Will a Schlage KS23D fit the same hasp as an ABUS 20/70 Diskus?
Not interchangeably. The ABUS 20/70 carries a 25/64 inch shackle diameter with 25/32 inch horizontal and 43/64 inch vertical shackle clearance, and the body is 2-3/4 inches wide in the round Diskus form. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, a thinner shackle in a conventional body. A hasp staple sized for the 25/64 inch ABUS shackle will accept the thinner Schlage shackle, but the reverse is not true, and the shallow Diskus shackle clearance means the 20/70 will not reach through a staple that a taller conventional shackle clears. Measure the staple against the 25/32 inch horizontal and 43/64 inch vertical clearance before substituting either way.
9) I need a taller shackle than the ABUS 20/70 to get around a thick chain or a raised staple - what should I order?
The Diskus form is the limit here: the 20/70 clears 25/32 inch horizontally and 43/64 inch vertically, a deliberately narrow opening that is what makes the shackle hard to attack. Nothing in the Diskus geometry gives you more reach. For a chain link or a tall staple, move to a long-shackle conventional lock such as the Sargent 60-858-2, a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, or the Sargent 82-856 with its 2 by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle. Both trade the 360-degree all-round shackle protection of the Diskus for the added opening.
10) Is the ABUS Diskus 20/70 padlock OK to leave outside in the rain?
It is built for it. The 20/70 is stainless steel inside and out, and the cylinder has a cover over it that keeps dirt and splashing water off the keyway. That is the part that usually kills an outdoor padlock, a corroded or fouled cylinder rather than the body. Common placements are factory gates, container doors, and truck and van bodies.
11) Does the key come out of the ABUS 20/70 when the padlock is open?
No, and that is deliberate. The 20/70 is key retaining, meaning the lock holds the key until it is locked shut again. Nobody walks off with the key in their pocket leaving a gate hanging open. If you want the opposite behaviour, a lock you can open and pocket the key from, that is a non key retaining padlock, such as the Sargent 858 or the Sargent 82-856 with its brass case and stainless shackle.
12) I need to track who opened a padlock and when. Will the ABUS 20/70 do that?
No. The Diskus 20/70 is a mechanical key lock with a disc cylinder, no electronics and no audit trail. For access records or scheduled credentials, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock in the System Series with a 5/16 inch shackle. That is a different class of product and a different price and administration burden, but it is what answers the audit question.
13) Are all ABUS Diskus 20 padlocks the same size, or do I need to specify?
The Diskus 20 is a family, not a single size, and the number after the slash is the body width. The 20/70 is the 2-3/4 inch body. Order by the full model designation so the lock matches the hasp you already have on the other doors, since a 20 series lock of a different width will not sit the same way in a hasp cup sized for the 70.
14) I want an audit trail on who opened the padlock - is the ABUS 20/70 the right lock?
No. The 20/70 Diskus is a mechanical lock built on the ABUS Plus disc cylinder and shipped with 2 keys; it records nothing. For access control on an outdoor point, the Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock supplied with cylinder, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter. Specify the 20/70 where the requirement is a purely mechanical, weather-sealed lock on a container, gate, or truck, and the 54515G XT where the requirement is electronic credential management.
15) Can I standardize a whole property on ABUS 20/70 padlocks with one key?
Yes. The ABUS 20/70 Diskus is ordered keyed alike or keyed different, so a fleet of gates, containers, and storage points can run on one key or on separate keys as the site requires. Peers approach fleet keying differently: the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock, which means the site rekeys by pulling cores rather than by replacing locks, and the Medeco 5260 runs the M3 key technology of the 52 Series. If the property standard is already a core system, keep to the removable core route; if the padlocks are a standalone set on outdoor points, the keyed alike 20/70 is the simpler answer.
16) Is a brass body padlock an equivalent substitute for the stainless steel ABUS 20/70 on an exposed exterior gate?
They are different material choices, not the same lock in another dress. The 20/70 is stainless steel outside and inside with a hardened stainless shackle and a cylinder cover against dirt and water spray. Brass-bodied peers include the Medeco 5260, a 52 Series brass body padlock in satin chrome with a 7/16 inch shackle, the Sargent 82-856 with a 2 by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle, and the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle. Brass bodies resist corrosion without plating and take a specified finish; the Sargent 758 and 858 are offered in US4 satin brass where the site standard calls for a matching finish across hardware.
17) Which padlocks come ready to use versus needing a cylinder ordered separately?
The ABUS 20/70 Diskus arrives complete, with its ABUS Plus disc cylinder and 2 keys. Among the peers, the Medeco 54515G XT is supplied with cylinder as well. The Medeco 521 G8R, by contrast, is furnished less its pop-out cylinder, so a cylinder has to be specified and fitted before the lock goes on the gate. That matters when the padlock is going out with a crew the same day rather than into a keying program.
18) Is the ABUS 20/70 Diskus rated for commercial use or is it a consumer lock?
Commercial. The 20/70 is specified for warehouses, industrial sites, factory gates, containers and lorries, and it is made in Germany with a shackle of hardened stainless steel that resists sawing and picking. It is the lock you put on the thing you cannot afford to lose, not a gym locker.
19) How many keys ship with the ABUS 20/70 Diskus padlock?
Two keys come with the 20/70. On a keyed alike order that means two keys per lock cut to the common key, so a crew of two can each carry one without a trip to a locksmith. Worth counting up front if you are standardizing a run of gates and want a spare set held in the office.
