BEST BD642 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the BEST BD642 used for?
The BD642 is a shackle plug tool for servicing BEST BD Series padlocks. It is the tool a locksmith uses to install and remove the shackle plug during padlock teardown and reassembly. It is a bench/service accessory, not a part that stays in the lock.
2) Will the BD642 shackle plug tool work on padlocks other than BEST BD Series?
No. The BD642 is engineered specifically for BEST BD Series padlocks. Use on another manufacturer's padlock, or on a BEST padlock outside the BD Series, is not supported, so match the tool to the BD Series lock you are servicing.
3) Do I need the BD642 to rekey a BEST BD Series padlock, or just to take the shackle out?
The BD642 addresses the shackle plug specifically, which is the step for opening up the padlock body and servicing or replacing the shackle. Core removal and rekeying on a BEST small format interchangeable core is done with a control key, not with this tool. Buy the BD642 when the work goes into the padlock body itself.
4) Does the BD642 come with the replacement shackle or shackle plug?
No. The BD642 is the service tool only. Replacement shackles, plugs, springs, or cores for a BD Series padlock are ordered separately as parts.
5) Is the BD642 something a facility maintenance shop should stock, or is it a one-time locksmith tool?
It is worth stocking wherever BD Series padlocks are standardized across a site, schools, industrial plants, government buildings, since it is the tool that lets in-house maintenance service the locks instead of sending them out. It is built for repeated use in professional service work rather than a single job.
6) Where can I find the service procedure for the BD642 shackle plug tool?
BEST publishes the BD642 within its D Series service equipment documentation, and that catalog is the reference for the shackle plug procedure. Follow the padlock's own service instructions for the correct sequence before applying the tool.
