Dexter ED1500 Series - 3FT Grade 1 Rim Exit Devices

The 36 inch ED1500 device covers doors from 29 inches up to 36 inches wide. Anything wider than that goes to the 48 inch device, which covers 33 inch to 48 inch doors. Don't size the device to the opening, size it to the door leaf, and on a pair each leaf gets its own device sized to that leaf.

No handing to specify. Every ED1500 device and every trim option in the series is non-handed, so one part number covers a left or right hand swing. That is worth knowing for a property manager stocking spares across a building: one device on the shelf fits any opening in the fleet.

The Dexter ED1500-R is carried as not wood door compatible. Among rim exit devices carried as wood door compatible, the Adams Rite 8700 Series in the 30 inch size is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device, and the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device that is also fire rated. The Dexter ED1500 requires a 4-1/4 inch minimum stile width, which rules out most narrow stile aluminum storefront. Hex key dogging comes standard on the ED1500 panic device. You depress the pushpad and turn the hex key, and the latch stays retracted so the door pushes free until you undog it. That is the usual setup for a storefront or office entry that has to stay open all day and lock at close. Fire openings are the exception, dogging is not allowed there.

A rim device like the ED1500 latches into a surface strike on the frame at the door edge, which is the simple, low-maintenance answer for a single door in a frame. It is the wrong choice for a pair of doors with no center mullion, because there is nothing on the frame for the strike to catch. For that opening you want vertical rods, top and bottom latching: the Hager 4501 is a 36 inch Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device with a wide stile pushpad, and the Hager 4601 is the narrow stile concealed rod version.

Deadlatching is standard on the ED1500, so the auxiliary latch blocks the main latchbolt from being pushed back once the door closes. That is what stops a card or shim being slipped past the strike on an exterior opening, and it is why this device is worth specifying on a perimeter door rather than an interior one.

If the specification on the drawing calls for Grade 1, stay with a Grade 1 device such as the Von Duprin 22-3FT wide stile pushpad or the Hager 4701 Series 36 inch rim device.
