Falcon 25-V-L-A 3 US26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Falcon 25-V vertical rod device on a fire rated door opening?
No. The Falcon 25-V is a non-fire-rated exit device, so it belongs on egress openings that are not part of a rated assembly. If the opening is a labeled fire door, look at a fire rated surface vertical rod instead: the Adams Rite 3100 Series and the TownSteel 9700 Series EF9727 are both fire rated wide stile surface vertical rod devices, and the Sargent 2727 is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile unit. Arrow's S1150 is fire rated as well, though it ships exit only with no trim.
2) Do I have to order the Falcon 25-V handed, or is it reversible in the field?
Handing is a required selection at order, RHR or LHR, but the device itself is field reversible, so a unit can be changed over on the job if the opening turns out to be the other hand. Order it to match the door you measured and treat the reversibility as insurance, not a reason to skip checking the swing.
3) What strikes does the Falcon 25-V need, and does the floor have to be prepped?
Two strikes, and they are not the same job. The 3788 top strike is surface applied to the frame head. The 2130 bottom strike mortises into the floor, so the threshold or floor slab has to be cut for it. If you cannot cut the floor, or the opening is over carpet or a finished stone threshold, order the device Less Bottom Rod (LBR) instead, which drops the bottom rod and floor strike entirely and latches at the head only.
4) Will a Falcon 25-V exit device latch into my existing strike?
Check the throw before you reuse anything. The 25-V throws 3/4 inch at the top latch and 1/2 inch at the bottom, and it is designed around the 3788 surface applied top strike and the 2130 mortised floor strike. If your existing openings were prepped for a different manufacturer's vertical rod device, the strike locations and depths are unlikely to line up, and you should plan on installing the strikes that go with the device rather than latching into what is there.
5) Does a surface vertical rod exit device work on a pair of doors without a center mullion?
That is what it is for. A surface vertical rod device latches at the frame head and at the floor rather than into a jamb strike, so a pair of doors can be secured with no center mullion and the full clear opening stays available. On the Falcon 25-V that means a 3788 strike at the head and a 2130 strike in the floor at each leaf. The alternative is a rim device, which latches into the edge of the opening and therefore needs a removable mullion between the leaves on a pair. Choose vertical rod when you want the opening clear; choose rim plus mullion when you would rather not cut the floor.
6) What do I have to specify when ordering a Falcon 25-V exit device?
Eight choices are required on the order and every one changes the part you receive. Handing (RHR or LHR). Dogging: hex, cylinder, or less dogging. Bottom rod: standard, LBR, or LBR-AFL with auxiliary fire pin. Electric locking: none, FSA fail safe, or FSE fail secure. Request to exit switch, yes or no. Device option: none, DM or LM latchbolt monitoring, MEL motorized electric latch retraction, or EA exit alarm. AX accessible device, yes or no. Frame material, ALF for aluminum frame or WDF for wood frame. On top of that you pick the finish, the lever function (L, LBE, NL, or DT dummy), and the lever style.
7) Is the Falcon 25-V rated for a high traffic entrance like a school or hospital corridor?
Yes. The 25-V is a Grade 1 device certified to ANSI A156.3-2001, which is the top commercial durability tier for exit devices, and the case is extruded aluminum. Grade 1 is what a school, hospital, or municipal building spec normally calls for on a main egress opening. It is a commercial device, not a light duty one, but it carries no fire rating, so keep it off labeled openings.
8) My door has a narrow stile. Can I use the Falcon 25-V?
No. The 25-V is a wide stile device, so it needs a door with enough stile face to carry the case and the trim. On an aluminum storefront door with a narrow stile you need a narrow stile vertical rod device instead. From what ZenSupply stocks, the Von Duprin 3327A and the 7527 are Grade 1 narrow stile surface vertical rod devices, the Corbin Russwin ED4400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile unit that accepts trim, and the TownSteel ED3727 is a Grade 1 narrow stile device. The Adams Rite 8200 Series is another narrow stile Grade 1 option.
9) What is the closest equivalent to a Falcon 25-V from another brand?
For a straight swap on a 36 inch wide stile 1-3/4 inch door, the Von Duprin 2227-3FT is the nearest match on the specs we hold: Grade 1, wide stile, non fire rated, 1-3/4 inch door. The Corbin Russwin ED5400 is another Grade 1 wide stile non rated 36 inch device, though it is listed exit only and accepts trim, so lever trim is a separate line. The BEST Precision 2201 is a 36 inch wide stile non rated device. Difference to watch: the 25-V comes configured with lever trim, so an exit only peer needs trim added to land in the same place.
10) What is the closest wide stile surface vertical rod equivalent to the Falcon 25-V for a 36 inch door?
The Von Duprin 2227-3FT is the nearest match: a 36 inch wide stile surface vertical rod device, Grade 1, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and non-handed rather than field reversible. The Falcon 25-V is also Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors in a wide stile case, with field reversible handing. The Sargent 3727 is another Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod option, supplied as exit only with a standard push bar, so it carries no lever trim. Where the Falcon 25-V differs from both is trim: it ships with 510L lever trim in Lever, Night Latch, Blank Escutcheon and Dummy Trim functions.
11) My door is an aluminum storefront with a narrow stile. Will the Falcon 25-V fit, and what should I order instead?
The Falcon 25-V is built as a wide stile device, so a narrow stile aluminum leaf needs a narrow stile chassis. The Von Duprin 3327A-3ft is a narrow stile surface vertical rod device with a grooved case for 36 inch doors, Grade 1, 1-3/4 inch. The Corbin Russwin ED4400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile 36 inch device for 1-3/4 inch doors, supplied exit only but accepting trim. The TownSteel ED3727 is a Grade 1 narrow stile device at 36 by 84 inches. The Arrow S1150 is offered for narrow or wide stile applications and is fire rated, exit only, less trim.
12) What is the difference between fail safe and fail secure on a Falcon 25-V, and which do I need?
The 25-V is offered with FSA fail safe or FSE fail secure electric locking, and the difference shows up the moment power drops. Fail safe releases the outside lever when power is lost, so the door can be pulled open from the outside during an outage or an alarm release. Fail secure keeps the outside lever locked when power is lost, so the opening stays secure. Either way the inside push bar always retracts the latches mechanically, so egress is never dependent on power. Access control openings normally take FSE unless the fire alarm sequence or the AHJ calls for release on power loss.
13) Which Falcon 25-V option do I need if I want the door to signal when it is opened or unlatched?
Two separate switches do two different jobs. RX, request to exit, signals that the push bar was pushed, which is what an access control panel uses to shunt an alarm on authorized egress. DM or LM latchbolt monitoring reports the actual latch position, which tells you the door is truly secured rather than just that nobody touched the bar. Both can be specified on the same device. If you want the latches pulled back electrically so the door is free to push during business hours, that is MEL, motorized electric latch retraction. For a standalone local horn with no panel behind it, EA is the exit alarm option.
14) What does hex dogging versus cylinder dogging change on an exit device?
Dogging holds the push bar depressed so the latches stay retracted and the door pushes free, which is how you set a storefront or a school corridor open during business hours. Hex dogging on the 25-V uses an allen key, so anyone with the key can dog it. Cylinder dogging takes a keyed cylinder, so dogging is controlled by whoever holds that key, which is what most institutions want. Less dogging means the bar cannot be held down at all. Worth knowing: a fire rated opening cannot be dogged mechanically, but the 25-V is not a fire rated device, so all three choices are open to you here.
15) Can I match my Falcon 25-V exit devices to the lever style and finish on the rest of my doors?
Twelve finishes are offered, covering the common commercial family: 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless, 628 aluminum anodized, 313AN dark bronze anodized, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, and 643E aged bronze. Lever style comes in Avalon, Dane, Latitude, Quantum, and Sutro, so the trim can be matched to the levers already on the building. If you are replacing one device in an existing run, note the number stamped on your current hardware and order the same one.
16) What is the difference between the L, NL, LBE and DT lever trim on a Falcon 25 Series device?
The trim function decides what someone on the outside can do. L (510L) is standard lever trim, keyed lever entry from the pull side. NL (510L-NL) is night latch, a cylinder only pull with no lever, so entry is by key alone. LBE (510L-BE) is a lever on a blank escutcheon with no cylinder, so the outside lever operates without a key when the device is dogged and does nothing when it is not. DT (510L-DT) is dummy trim, a fixed lever that never retracts anything, used where the outside face must never open, exit only. Pick by whether the outside needs key access, no access, or a pull that is only live during dogged hours.
17) Does the Falcon 25-V work on a wood frame, or only aluminum storefront?
Both, but it is a choice you make on the order. Frame material is a required selection: ALF for an aluminum frame or WDF for a wood frame. That determines the mounting hardware supplied with the device, and sheet metal screws and machine screws are standard. Specify the frame you actually have; the wrong selection means the fasteners are wrong for the substrate.
18) Is there a cheaper duty level than the Falcon 25-V for a low traffic back door?
The 25-V is a Grade 1 device, which is the heaviest commercial tier and more than a low use service door usually needs. If you want to step down, ZenSupply carries Grade 2 surface vertical rod devices: the Dexter ED2000 Series and the TownSteel TS5100 in 36 inch. Design Hardware also splits its line by duty, with the 1000V listed as heavy duty and the 2000V as standard duty. Keep Grade 1 on main egress and high traffic corridors; a Grade 2 is a reasonable call on a rear stockroom door.
19) What does LBR-AFL mean on a Falcon 25-V order and when do I use it?
LBR-AFL is less bottom rod with an auxiliary fire pin. Standard LBR removes the bottom rod and the floor strike so nothing has to be cut into the floor, which is the usual answer on carpet, on an uneven slab, or where a mortised 2130 strike is not practical. The AFL version adds an auxiliary pin at the door edge that engages under heat, which is how a less bottom rod pair holds together in a fire condition. Note that the 25-V itself is not a fire rated device, so specify LBR-AFL only where the project spec or the AHJ calls for the pin, not as a substitute for a rated device.
20) I only need free egress with no outside trim. Is there a simpler alternative to the Falcon 25-V lever trim device?
Yes. The Falcon 25-V is supplied with lever trim for outside operation. If the opening needs egress only, the Arrow 3700 Series is a Grade 1 wide stile pushpad surface vertical rod exit bar in an exit only function, and the Corbin Russwin ED5400 is a Grade 1 wide stile 36 inch device supplied exit only while still accepting trim if that changes later. The Sargent 3727 is a Grade 1 wide stile exit only device with a standard push bar. Note the Falcon 25-V lever range also includes a Dummy Trim function if you want a pull that does not operate the latches.
21) What is the difference between the Falcon 25-V and a Grade 2 surface vertical rod device?
The Falcon 25-V is certified to ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 under ANSI A156.3-2001. The TownSteel TS5100 Series at 36 by 84 inches is a Grade 2 heavy duty wide stile surface vertical rod device, and the Dexter ED2000 Series is a Grade 2 surface vertical rod panic device. Neither carries a fire rating. If the facility spec on the drawing calls out Grade 1, the TS5100 and ED2000 will not satisfy it; if the spec is silent and traffic is light, the Grade 2 chassis is a shorter route to a working device.
22) I want to order the Falcon 25-V less bottom rod. What other surface vertical rod devices come that way?
The Falcon 25-V can be ordered as LBR less bottom rod, or LBR-AFL less bottom rod with auxiliary fire pin. The Orca Hardware OED56 Series 36 inch device is supplied less bottom rod as standard, in a standard duty non-handed chassis with an aluminum finish, for 1-3/4 inch doors and exit only. The Falcon 25-V route keeps the 510L lever trim and the twelve finish options including 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless.
23) The door is a 33 inch leaf, not 36. What surface vertical rod device covers that opening?
The Falcon 25-V is a 36 inch device. For a 33 inch leaf, Design Hardware offers the 1000V Series in a 33 inch heavy duty surface vertical rod device and the 2000V Series in a 33 inch standard duty version; neither carries a fire rating. Adams Rite covers 30 inch openings with the 8100 Series wide stile Grade 1 device. Size the device to the door leaf rather than trimming a 36 inch chassis.
24) We are standardizing surface vertical rod exit devices across a facility. Which Grade 1 wide stile devices should we shortlist alongside the Falcon 25-V?
For a Grade 1 wide stile standard the candidates are the Falcon 25-V, certified to ANSI A156.3-2001 for 1-3/4 inch doors with field reversible handing; the Von Duprin 2227-3FT, Grade 1 wide stile non-handed for 1-3/4 inch doors; the TownSteel ED8927 at 36 by 84 inches, Grade 1 wide stile and wood door compatible; and the Corbin Russwin ED5400, Grade 1 wide stile 36 inch for 1-3/4 inch doors, exit only and accepting trim. The Falcon 25-V is the one of that group specified here with lever trim in five lever styles - Avalon, Dane, Latitude, Quantum and Sutro - which matters if you want one lever look across the building.
25) Is the Sargent 12-8710 an alternative to the Falcon 25-V for a working exit door?
No. The Sargent 12-8710 is a dummy function device: it is a fire rated wide stile Grade 1 surface vertical rod unit in a dummy configuration, used where the door needs the appearance of an exit device without operating latches. The Falcon 25-V is a working Grade 1 device with 3/4 inch top and 1/2 inch bottom latch throw and 510L lever trim. If you want the dummy look within the Falcon 25-V range, order the DT dummy trim lever function instead of substituting a dummy chassis.
26) We need the exit device on a wood door. Does the Falcon 25-V suit, or is there a better fit?
The Falcon 25-V is ordered with a frame material option of ALF aluminum frame or WDF wood frame, so the wood application is covered on the order. Among comparable devices, the TownSteel ED8927 and EF9727 at 36 by 84 inches are both listed as wood door compatible, the EF9727 additionally fire rated and heavy duty. The Von Duprin 7527-3ft and 7827-3ft Grade 1 devices are not wood door compatible, so keep those off a wood opening.
27) How does the Falcon 25-V dogging compare with the Von Duprin 7827?
The Falcon 25-V is ordered with hex dogging, cylinder dogging, or less dogging, so the dogging method is a choice at order time. The Von Duprin 7827-3ft is a 3 ft Grade 1 surface vertical rod device supplied with hex key dogging, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and it is a narrow stile chassis rather than wide stile. If the specification calls for keyed cylinder dogging so that only a keyholder can hold the latches retracted, the cylinder dogging option on the Falcon 25-V covers it.
28) What is the AX option on a Falcon exit device for?
AX is the accessible device option, and on the 25-V it is a yes or no choice made at order. It is the version to specify where the opening has to meet reduced operating force requirements for accessible routes, which is common on main entrances, restrooms, and any door on an accessible path in a public building. If you are standardizing a facility on accessible hardware, specify AX on every 25-V in the order rather than mixing.
29) Is a crossbar exit device a substitute for the Falcon 25-V touchpad device?
They are not interchangeable in appearance or door prep. The Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod device for 36 inch doors at 1-3/4 inch, exit only and accepting operator trim. The Falcon 25-V is a wide stile touchpad style device with 510L lever trim and a 2-3/4 inch projection. If you are matching a run of existing touchpad devices across a building, the crossbar will read differently on the door.
30) The Falcon 25-V is field reversible. Which comparable surface vertical rod devices are also handing flexible?
The Falcon 25-V is field reversible and ordered as RHR or LHR. Among comparable devices, the Von Duprin 2227-3FT is non-handed, the Orca Hardware OED56 36 inch device is non-handed, the BEST Precision 5201 Series 36 inch device is reversible, and the Sargent 2727 is a reversible Grade 1 fire rated device. A non-handed or reversible chassis is what you want when you are stocking one part number for openings that swing both ways.
31) What surface vertical rod devices compare to the Falcon 25-V from Dexter and BEST?
Dexter offers the ED1000 Series and the ED1500 Series, both Grade 1 surface vertical rod devices, matching the Falcon 25-V on grade. BEST Precision offers the 2201 Series in a 36 inch wide stile surface vertical rod device and the 5201 Series in a 36 inch reversible version. The Falcon 25-V is the one carrying 510L lever trim across Avalon, Dane, Latitude, Quantum and Sutro lever styles and twelve finishes, so it is the pick when the outside trim look is part of the specification.
