Kaba Ilco 53225-SC-2-26D-KA – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does 2 o'clock cam position mean on a euro profile cylinder and does it matter?
Cam position is where the cam sits at rest relative to the keyway, and it decides whether the cam clears the lock case and drives the follower correctly. These Ilco cylinders are built with the cam at 2 o'clock. If the European mortise lock you are retrofitting was supplied with a cylinder whose cam rests in a different position, the throw will not pick up the lock's cam follower properly. Pull the existing cylinder, note where the cam sits with the key out, and match it.
2) Is this a double cylinder, keyed both sides, or does one side have a thumbturn?
Keyed on both sides. It is a double cylinder profile, so there is no thumbturn, and the door must be unlocked with a key from the inside as well as the outside. That matters for egress: on a door in a path of exit, a double keyed cylinder can be restricted by local code, and property managers replacing a thumbturn version should confirm what the opening requires before swapping. If you need key outside and turn inside, this is not the part.
3) Can I key these Ilco euro cylinders into my existing Schlage master key system?
Yes, if your system runs on one of the keyways offered. These are cut for Schlage C, Schlage E, Schlage F, and the Schlage SX keyway, plus Corbin CD. That is what lets a euro profile door join a building that is otherwise on Schlage cylinders. Order keyed alike if the group of doors should share one key, or keyed different if each opening needs its own. The cylinders are rekeyable, so a system change later does not mean buying new hardware.
4) Should I order the 5 pin or the 6 pin euro cylinder?
Match the pinning to the system the key already belongs to. The Ilco profile cylinder is offered in 5 pin and 6 pin. A 5 pin cylinder will not accept a key cut on a 6 pin bitting and a master keyed system built on six chambers needs six. If you are starting fresh on a single opening with no master key above it, 5 pin is the simpler build; if these doors sit under an existing master or grand master, order to match what the system was pinned at.
5) What finishes do the Ilco double keyed profile cylinders come in, and will they match my existing hardware?
Three finishes: bright brass (03), satin brass (04), and satin chrome (26D). Satin chrome 26D is the usual match for commercial storefront and aluminum door hardware, satin brass 04 for brushed brass trim, bright brass 03 for polished. Because the cylinder is the visible ring at the escutcheon, matching it to the lever and escutcheon around it is what a property manager standardizing a building actually cares about. Custom lengths and finishes are handled by quote.
6) Is a euro profile cylinder the right choice, or do I need a mortise cylinder or rim cylinder instead?
Three different bodies for three different locks. The euro profile cylinder is the flat keystone shaped body that slides through a European style mortise lock case and is held by a single screw through the lock edge. A threaded round mortise cylinder screws into an American mortise lock. A rim cylinder mounts through the door with a tailpiece into a rim exit device or rim latch. They are not interchangeable. Pull the existing part: if it is flat sided with a cam midway along the body, this Ilco double keyed profile cylinder is the family you want.
7) My euro lock needs a longer cylinder on the outside than the inside. Can I get an offset one?
The stock Ilco double keyed profile cylinder is symmetrical, 28mm on each side of a 10mm center. If your door has a thick outside escutcheon, an added armor plate, or a cladding that pushes the outside face further from the lock case, that symmetrical body will sit short on one side. Custom lengths are available by quote, so an offset split is the route rather than forcing the stock 28/10/28. Measure each face to the center of the cam screw before you ask for the quote.
8) How is the euro cylinder taken apart to rekey, and what holds the chambers?
These Ilco profile cylinders are rekeyable, with chamber caps retained by M4 0.70 x 6mm long set screws. A locksmith backing those screws out gets at the pin chambers to repin the cylinder to a new bitting. Worth knowing before you buy: the screws are metric, so the driver and any replacements come out of a metric set, not the imperial hardware most US locksmiths carry on the truck.
9) Are these euro cylinders suitable for a commercial building or are they residential grade?
Built for commercial use. The bodies are machined from solid brass bar stock, and they are sold as replacement parts for commercial door hardware, which is what a facility standardizing euro profile openings across a property needs. Ordering keyed alike across a group of doors lets one key run a floor or a wing, with keyed different used where an opening has to stay on its own key.
