Rockwood 460 Kick Down Door Stop

The 460 works by dropping a rubber bumper down onto the floor, and that rubber is what grips. On hard floors (tile, vinyl, sealed concrete, wood) it holds well. On carpet the rubber has less to bite into, and the 4 inch projection is fixed, so a thick pad can leave the shoe compressing the carpet instead of planting on a firm surface. For carpeted openings a spring-loaded holder such as the Ives FS452 is the type to look at instead.

Four inches of projection when kicked down. That number decides whether it works on your opening: measure from where the stop mounts on the door face to the finished floor. Undercut doors with a big gap, or an opening with a raised threshold or transition strip in the swing path, can eat that 4 inches and leave the bumper short of the floor. The body itself measures 2-1/16 x 1-3/8 inches on the door.

It carries ANSI A156.16, L01382, and it is a commercial grade item. A156.16 is the BHMA standard covering auxiliary hardware, and L01382 is the specific type number a spec writer or architect puts on a hardware schedule for this kind of kick down holder. If your submittal calls out an L013xx door holder, the 460 answers it by number.

Yes. The 460 takes replacement bumper No. 461B, so a worn or torn shoe is a parts swap, not a new stop. That matters if you are maintaining a lot of doors, the aluminum body and its screw holes stay in the door and only the rubber gets changed out.

No. Any device that holds a fire door open has to release on alarm, and a mechanical kick down holds until someone physically kicks it back up. Fire rated openings need a self closing door with either no hold open or a listed electromagnetic hold open that drops on the fire alarm. Use the 460 on non rated doors: offices, corridors without a rating, storerooms, apartment entries that are not rated.

The Ives FS455 is the brass version. It carries a 4 inch extension and a non-marring rubber shoe, which is the same reach and the same floor-contact idea as the Rockwood 460's rubber bumper on a 4 inch projection, just in brass rather than cast aluminum. Order the FS455 where the other hardware on the opening is brass and the FS455A or the Rockwood 460 where it is aluminum.

The Orca Hardware 40ST Series kick down door holder measures 5.275 inches, which is more reach than the Rockwood 460's 4 inch projection or the Ives FS455A's 4 inch extension. On an opening with carpet, a threshold transition, or a large undercut, the longer Orca arm covers the gap that a 4 inch unit cannot.

The Rockwood 460 carries ANSI A156.16, L01382, which is the standard a facility spec on architectural door trim usually calls out by number. The Ives FS452 is a kick down door holder with a stainless steel spring listed as heavy duty. If the drawing names an A156.16 designation, the 460 answers it directly; specify the FS452 where the requirement is a heavy duty kick down holder rather than a cited ANSI number.

Mounting hardware is in the box: four #8 x 1 inch flat head sheet metal screws. Those are self-tapping wood/sheet metal screws, so on a hollow metal door you drill and tap or use the screws into the door skin, and on a wood door they drive straight in. Note the 1 inch length, it means you are fastening into the door face, not through it. No through-bolts and no separate strike or floor plate are part of the assembly.

One finish only: spray painted silver, the ALM finish. The body is solid cast aluminum. Silver painted aluminum reads close to a satin aluminum or clear anodized storefront, so it blends on aluminum entrances and painted hollow metal. It will not match a satin chrome or brass opening. For satin chrome the Delaney kick down stop is offered in US26D, and for brass the Ives FS455 is a brass holder.

Different jobs. A kick down like the 460 rides on the door and holds it at any position you kick it down at, which is what you want when the door has no wall behind it to strike, when you need it parked at various angles for moving carts or furniture, or in a corridor where a wall stop would be nowhere near the swing. A wall or floor stop only stops the door at one fixed point. The tradeoff with a kick down is that it hangs off the door face and needs floor clearance, 4 inches of projection here, and the rubber shoe is a wear part.

It is built for that duty. The body is solid cast aluminum, not stamped or plastic, and it is a commercial specification item carrying ANSI A156.16, L01382. Rockwood hardware of this type goes into institutional buildings, offices, retail, schools, hotels and restaurants. The one consumable is the rubber shoe, and that is replaceable with the 461B bumper, so a high traffic door does not mean replacing the whole stop.

They are all kick down units that hold a door open at the floor, but they are built differently. The FS452 is a kick down door holder with a stainless steel spring; the FS455 is brass with a 4 inch extension and a non-marring rubber shoe; the Rockwood 460 is solid cast aluminum with a rubber bumper and a 4 inch projection. Check the floor surface before you pick: a rubber shoe or bumper grips finished floors, and the spring construction on the FS452 is the mechanism difference to confirm against what is already installed on your other doors.

Do not count on it. The Rockwood 460 mounts with four #8 x 1 inch flat head sheet metal screws and has a 2-1/16 by 1-3/8 inch footprint on the door. The Ives FS455A and FS455 are 4 inch units and the Orca 40ST is a 5.275 inch unit, each with its own base pattern, so a brand swap usually means new holes in the door face. Staying with the Rockwood 460 across a fleet of doors is what keeps the existing prep usable.

The 460 lands on rubber, not metal, so the contact face is soft. Rubber can still leave a black scuff on light vinyl or polished tile if the door gets shoved while the stop is down. If a mark free floor is the priority, the Ives FS455 is specified with a non-marring rubber shoe.
