1) What size Sargent KESO F1 mortise cylinder do I need for my door?
The KESO F1-83-5170 mortise cylinder comes in four lengths: 1-1/4, 1-3/8, 1-1/2 and 1-3/4 inches. Length is driven by door thickness and by how far the lock case sits back from the face of the door, so measure from the cylinder ring seat to the cam. Too short and the cam will not reach the lock hub; too long and the cylinder stands proud of the trim and becomes a pry target. On a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door with a normal mortise case, the 1-1/4 inch cylinder is the usual starting point and the longer lengths cover thicker doors and thicker trim stack-ups.
2) Which cam do I order with a Sargent KESO F1 mortise cylinder?
Three cam choices: Standard, 105, and 101. If you do not specify, you get the SARGENT standard offset cam, p/n 13-2563, which is what most SARGENT mortise locks take. The 105 cam, p/n 13-2522, is the shorter cam used on the inside cylinder of 78 and 8216 function locks, and the 16 and 92 function mortise locks also call for it on the inside. The 101 cam, p/n 13-2521, is the ADAMS RITE cam, so pick that one when the cylinder is going into Adams Rite style hardware rather than a SARGENT mortise case. Get the cam wrong and the key turns but the lock does not retract.
3) Can I rekey a KESO F1 mortise cylinder without taking the lock apart?
Yes. The F1-83-5170 is a removable core cylinder, so the core pulls out and a new core drops in without removing the cylinder from the door or opening up the mortise lock. For a property manager turning units or an MRO crew handling a tenant change, that means the rekey is a core swap at the door rather than a lock teardown. 4) Will a KESO F1 core work in my existing Sargent key system?

Both are order options on the F1-83-5170, along with standard keying. Keyed alike (KA) puts one key in every listed cylinder, which is what you want for a run of doors one person needs to open, a mechanical room set, or matching an entry and a back door on the same unit. One thing to know before you order: the core itself is supplied in either 4 or 26D finish regardless of the cylinder finish you pick, so the visible core face may not match the ring.
7) Is the Sargent KESO F1-83-5170 a complete cylinder or just the core?
You are ordering the mortise cylinder with removable core, in the length, finish and cam you specify. It is a replacement part for a mortise lock, not a lock in itself, so it drops into an existing mortise case that is prepped for a standard mortise cylinder thread. Order the outside cylinder with the standard offset cam, p/n 13-2563, and the inside one with the 105. Fitting a standard offset cam where a 105 belongs will bind or fail to throw the lock.
9) Can this Sargent cylinder go into Adams Rite hardware?
Yes, if you order it with the 101 cam. The KESO F1-83-5170 is offered with the ADAMS RITE 101 cam, p/n 13-2521, which is the cam Adams Rite style narrow stile hardware uses in place of the SARGENT offset cam. Specify the 101 on the order; the standard cam will not drive that hardware.
10) Is a brass KESO F1 cylinder going to hold up on an exterior door?
The F1-83-5170 is built from brass, bronze and stainless steel, which is why the finish range runs to stainless 32 and 32D and to the suede powder coats. Brass and bronze do not rust, and the clear-coated and powder-coated finishes add a barrier against weathering. For a coastal or heavy-weather exterior opening, the satin stainless 32D or a powder coat is the more durable choice than a clear-coated bright brass, which will show wear at the keyway first.
