Trimco PG8000 Series Panic and Latch Guards

The PG Series end cap guards mate with most manufacturers' exit devices, so they are not tied to a single device brand. What they need is an exposed lower rod device with a lower latch bolt at the threshold; a rim device or a concealed vertical rod door has nothing at the bottom for the guard to cover.

Size and construction. PG8000 is a fixed 10 x 11-1/2 inch latch guard, so you order it and you are done. PG8002 is a one piece guard, 10 inches by a width you specify. PG8002-1 is the same made-to-width guard in two pieces. Pick the fixed PG8000 if 11-1/2 inches covers your opening; go to a specify-width model when the door or the latch position needs a wider guard.

The PG8000 Series is UL Listed, which is the listing you need to add a guard over the lower latch on a labeled opening. It is also ADA compliant, which is the point of covering the lower latch protrusion in the first place on a path of travel.

Different jobs. The Trimco PG8000 Series covers the lower latch bolt of an exposed rod exit device on a commercial opening. A storefront door with a hookbolt or deadlatch and a vulnerable strike wants a latch protector instead, like the Don-Jo LP-307 at 2-5/8 x 7 inches in 12 gauge steel for out swing aluminum entrance doors, or the Don-Jo NELP-207 at 3-1/2 x 6.5 inches. Those cover the latch and strike gap against pry attack; the PG8000 covers a protruding bottom rod latch against impact.

They protect two different things on two different door types. The Trimco PG8000 is a panic guard that installs over the lower latch bolt of an exposed vertical rod exit device, shielding it from work carts, fork lifts and pallet jacks and keeping the latch protrusion away from the foot area of wheelchair users. The Don-Jo LP-307 is a latch protector for aluminum storefront entrance doors, 2-5/8 inch by 7 inch in 12-gauge steel, built for an out swing opening. If the door has a rim or surface vertical rod exit device with a bottom latch at the floor, the PG8000 is the guard that addresses it; if the concern is a latch on an aluminum storefront entrance door, the LP-307 is the part that covers it.

Move to the specify-width models in the same series rather than a different door's latch protector. The PG8000 is fixed at 10 inch by 11-1/2 inch. The PG8002 is a one piece panic guard at 10 inch by a specified width, and the PG8002-1 is the two piece version at 10 inch by a specified width, so the guard is made to the opening instead of the opening being made to fit the guard. All three carry the same finishes, including 630 satin stainless steel and 613 oil rubbed bronze. The Don-Jo latch protectors are fixed-size parts for aluminum entrance doors and do not substitute for a wide exit device bottom latch.

No handing to specify. The PG8000 Series is a non-handed design, so the same part goes on either leaf of a pair and you can stock one part number across a building. Finish and model are the only two choices on the order.

The LP-307 is specified in 12-gauge steel; the GLP-307 is the same footprint in the Don-Jo GLP line. Because the two share width, height and swing, they cover the same strike area on an aluminum entrance door.

The NELP-207 covers a different shape of area. It measures 3-1/2 inch by 6.5 inch in 12 gauge steel for aluminum entrance doors on an out swing, so it is wider and shorter than the GLP-307 and LP-307, which are both 2-5/8 inch by 7 inch out swing protectors for aluminum entrance doors. All three are entrance function. Match the choice to how much stile width the door gives you next to the strike and how much vertical coverage the latch needs.

Five finishes across all three models: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 629 bright stainless steel and 630 satin stainless steel. For a building already standardized on brushed stainless exit hardware, 630 is the match; 629 for polished. Same five are available on the PG8000, PG8002 and PG8002-1.

Commercial only. Trimco lists the PG8000 Series for commercial and industrial buildings, government and military facilities, hospitality, hospitals and health care, and manufacturing plants. The 18 gauge stainless build is aimed at exactly the pallet jack and cart traffic those buildings run.
