Zero 365AA Heavy-Duty Surface Mounted Automatic Door Bottom

The patented automatic door bottom technology from Zero ensures an efficient seal against the floor or saddle. As the door is closed, the adjustable plunger is compressed against the door frame, activating a concealed flat spring mechanism. Zero door bottoms are designed to block penetration by air, sound, smoke, and flames.

Zero International 365AA 36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is an automatic door bottom and how is the Zero 365AA different from a regular door sweep?
A standard sweep drags on the floor all the time. The Zero 365AA is an automatic door bottom: as the door closes, a plunger at the hinge end hits the frame and compresses, which releases a concealed flat spring that drops the seal down onto the floor or saddle. Open the door and the seal retracts back up into the housing. That means no drag on carpet or finished flooring, and no seal wearing itself out on every swing. Use it where you need a real seal against air, sound, smoke and flame but cannot live with a sweep riding the floor.
2) Does the Zero 365AA automatic door bottom mortise into the door or mount on the surface?
Surface mounted. The 365AA housing screws onto the face of the door at the bottom rail, so there is no routing or mortising of the door edge. That makes it the right choice for retrofit work and for doors you cannot cut into, such as an existing rated door where you do not want to touch the core. If the job calls for the seal hidden inside the door bottom, a surface unit like this is the wrong type and you need a mortised automatic door bottom instead.
3) Is the Zero 365AA fire rated for a labeled opening?
Fire rated, UL10C. That is the positive pressure fire test standard, so the 365AA can go on a labeled fire door assembly where the opening calls for a UL10C listed door bottom. It is also listed under ANSI/BHMA R3B3341.
4) What lengths does the Zero 365AA automatic door bottom come in, and what do I order for a 3-0 door?
Three lengths: 36, 38 and 48 inches. A 3-0 door is 36 inches wide, so the 36 inch unit is the match. The 38 inch is there for doors slightly over 36 and for openings where you want a little extra to cut back. Automatic door bottoms are cut to fit at the ends, so order the next length up from your actual door width and trim, never order short.
5) What is the seal material on the Zero 365AA and will it hold up in a commercial building?
The 365AA ships with a closed cell sponge neoprene seal in an aluminum housing. Closed cell means the neoprene does not wick water and it recovers its shape, which is what you want for a smoke and air seal that cycles every time the door swings. The unit is rated commercial, so it is built for traffic in schools, hospitals, hotels and multi-family corridors rather than light residential use.
6) What finish is the Zero 365AA and will it match the other aluminum hardware on my doors?
Clear anodized aluminum. That is the AA in the model number, and it sits alongside standard mill-finish aluminum storefront, aluminum frames and clear anodized thresholds without looking off. If you need a different look, Zero builds the same 365 door bottom in other finishes, listed as the 365BK, 365D and 365G. Order the 365AA when the surrounding hardware is clear aluminum, and one of the others when you are matching dark bronze, gold or black.
7) Will the Zero 365AA seal against a threshold, or does it only work on a bare floor?
Both. The 365AA drops onto the floor or onto a saddle, so it works over a finished floor slab and it works over a threshold plate. On a rated opening a threshold gives the neoprene a flat, consistent surface to land on, which is the more reliable of the two if the concrete is uneven.
8) Do I have to set the drop height on the Zero 365AA after I install it?
Yes, and it is the step people skip. The plunger on the 365AA is adjustable, so after the housing is fastened to the door you set the plunger projection to control how far the seal drops. Too little and it never touches the floor, which kills the smoke and sound seal; too much and the door will not close properly or the mechanism stays loaded. Set it with the door in the frame and check that the neoprene makes continuous contact across the full width.
9) Will an automatic door bottom cut down noise between a corridor and a room?
That is one of the main reasons to use one. The 365AA blocks air, sound, smoke and flame at the bottom of the door, which is the biggest gap in most openings. Because the neoprene seal retracts when the door opens, it can seal tight against the floor without dragging, and a tight bottom seal is what makes the rest of the perimeter gasketing on the frame actually work. Gasketing the jambs and head without sealing the bottom leaves the sound path open.
