Blackburn ASP1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn ASP1 splice sleeve take?
The ASP1 is sized for 1 AWG conductor. It's a compression splice sleeve, so both conductor ends go into the sleeve and get crimped with the matching die; it is not a mechanical set-screw connector.
2) Can I use an aluminum compression splice on copper conductor, or is the ASP1 aluminum only?
The ASP1 barrel is aluminum with a tin plated surface, which is the standard construction for AL9CU-style dual-rated compression splices. Tin plating is what allows aluminum-bodied connectors to be used on copper without a direct aluminum-to-copper contact. Confirm the AL9CU marking on the sleeve itself for the run you are splicing, since the rating is stamped on the part.
3) Is this splice rated for medium voltage cable up to 35kV?
Yes. The ASP1 carries a 35 kV voltage rating, so it can be used in medium voltage splices as well as 600V work. The insulation or splice kit over the sleeve has to carry the same class rating; the sleeve alone is a bare conductor connection.
4) Why is the ASP1 splice sleeve gold colored?
Gold is the die color code on the sleeve, and it tells the installer which crimp die and die index to use. The finish itself is tin plating over aluminum; the gold marking is how you match sleeve to tool on the job.
5) Is a compression splice sleeve the right choice, or should I use a mechanical splice instead?
A compression sleeve like the ASP1 gives a permanent, sealed connection with no set screws to back off, which is why it's specified for direct-buried, underground, and pull-box splices and for medium voltage work at up to 35 kV. The tradeoff is that you need a hydraulic or battery crimper and the correct die, and the joint can't be taken apart. If the splice has to be reopened for testing or future changes, a mechanical set-screw connector is the better pick.
6) Do I get one sleeve or a box when I order the ASP1?
Pricing and packaging are per piece, sold each. For a splice you need one sleeve per conductor, so a three-phase splice takes three, plus one for the neutral if you are splicing it.
7) Where is the Blackburn ASP1 manufactured?
Country of origin is Mexico. Useful if you're tracking origin for a government or institutional job with sourcing documentation requirements.
