Thomas & Betts XJG34-EMT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How much conduit movement does the Thomas & Betts 1 inch EMT expansion coupling absorb?
Four inches of travel. That is the total movement the coupling takes up as the run grows and shrinks with temperature, so on a long exposed run you set it near the middle of its travel at install so it has room to move both directions. Rooftop, parking deck, and outdoor runs are where that four inches gets used; a short interior run inside conditioned space usually never needs it.
2) Do I need an expansion coupling on EMT, or can I just run the conduit through?
You need one where the conduit crosses a building expansion joint or where the run is long and exposed to real temperature swing. EMT is rigid; if the run cannot move, the thermal growth loads the couplings, straps, and boxes at the ends. The Thomas & Betts XJG34-EMT gives a 1 inch EMT run four inches of travel to move in instead. Interior runs in conditioned space typically do not, which is why you mostly see these on rooftops, parking structures, and at structural joints.
3) What is the Thomas & Betts EMT expansion coupling made of, and will it hold up outdoors?
Ductile iron. That is the body material, chosen for impact strength and corrosion resistance in exposed and industrial conduit work, which is why it shows up on rooftop and parking structure runs rather than a stamped steel fitting. Ductile iron is also heavier than a plain EMT coupling, so support the conduit on both sides of it rather than letting the fitting hang on the run.
4) Does an EMT expansion coupling maintain the equipment grounding path, or do I need a bonding jumper?
Treat the expansion fitting as a break in the metallic grounding path and bond across it. An expansion coupling has to slide, so the sliding joint is not a reliable equipment ground, and the standard practice on a run using EMT as the equipment grounding conductor is an external bonding jumper across the fitting. That jumper is a separate item, not part of the XJG34-EMT coupling itself.
5) How do you install a 1 inch EMT expansion coupling correctly?
Set it where the movement is, not wherever it lands. Position the coupling at the expansion joint or mid-run, connect the first length of 1 inch EMT, then set the coupling opening to allow for the travel the run will actually see before securing the second length. If you install it fully collapsed on a hot day, it has nowhere to go when the conduit grows further. Check that the body slides freely after both ends are made up and before the run is energized.
