1) What does the LL in the Red Dot BLL-3 conduit body mean, and when do I use it instead of an LB or LR?
LL means the opening and the side outlet are on the left when you face the cover with the run going up and down. An LB turns the conduit back through a wall, an LR turns to the right, an LL turns to the left. Pick LL when the branch has to leave the run on the left side, and order the LB or LR version if the direction is anything else. The BLL-3 is a 1 inch EMT body, so the direction is fixed at manufacture, not field adjustable.
2) Will the Red Dot BLL-3 conduit body work on rigid or IMC conduit, or only EMT?
EMT only. The BLL-3 is a Series B body built for 1 inch EMT and takes the EMT setscrew style connection. Threaded rigid or IMC needs a threaded conduit body (Form 7 / Series 5 type) instead, because threaded pipe will not land in an EMT hub.
3) Does the Red Dot BLL-3 come with a cover and gasket, or do I order those separately?
Covers and gaskets for Series B conduit bodies are ordered as separate line items in the matching 1 inch size. Plan on a cover plus gasket per body if the location needs to be closed up; the die cast aluminum body itself is the only thing the BLL-3 model number covers.
4) Is a die cast aluminum conduit body OK outdoors or in a damp location?
Aluminum die cast holds up well outdoors and resists corrosion, which is why it is the common choice for exposed EMT work on building exteriors and in damp commercial spaces. Two cautions: aluminum should not be set in direct contact with concrete or embedded in masonry, and in a wet location the body needs its cover and gasket installed to keep water out.
5) Can I use the BLL-3 as a pull point and splice my conductors inside it?
An LL body like the BLL-3 is intended as a change of direction and a pull access point. Whether you can splice inside depends on the body's cubic inch capacity against the number and size of conductors, so on a 1 inch run with large conductors it is usually a pull point only. Removing the cover gives you access for pulling and for later maintenance without breaking the EMT run.
