Allied Tube & Conduit CKR-100KON – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Allied Tube & Conduit CKR-100KON coupling rated for outdoor and wet locations?
Yes. The CKR-100KON is a raintight compression coupling, rated for use in wet locations, so it is suitable for exterior EMT runs exposed to weather. It is also concrete tight, which means it can be used in poured slab and concrete-encased runs without grout intrusion at the joint.
2) Is a compression coupling like the CKR-100KON the right choice, or should I use a set screw coupling?
Use the compression style when the run is outdoors, in a damp or wet location, or encased in concrete, which is what the CKR-100KON is built for. Set screw couplings are for dry interior work only and are not raintight or concrete tight. If the conduit is exposed to weather or being poured in, the compression coupling is the one that holds up.
3) Is the CKR-100KON coupling steel or die cast?
It is a steel fitting with heavy steel walls, not a die cast zinc body. That matters where the coupling takes mechanical abuse, such as exposed exterior risers or runs in a parking structure, and it keeps the coupling in line with the steel EMT it joins.
4) What does the blue nut on the Allied Tube & Conduit CKR series coupling mean?
The blue compression nut is an identification feature. On a job where raintight and standard couplings are both in the bag, the blue nut tells the installer and the inspector at a glance that the fitting is the raintight version, without pulling it back off the tubing.
5) Do I need any extra parts to install the CKR-100KON on an EMT run?
No separate parts are needed for the joint itself. A compression coupling comes with its compression nuts and rings assembled on the body, so you cut and ream the 1 inch EMT, slide the tubing in to the shoulder on each side, and tighten both nuts with a wrench. Anchoring or strapping the conduit is separate hardware.
