Metallics JRM69 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Metallics JRM69 machine screw thread into a standard 10-32 device box or fixture strap?
Yes. The JRM69 is a 10-32 machine screw, 32 threads per inch, which is the thread used on most electrical device boxes, fixture straps and plaster rings. At 1-1/4 inch long it gives extra reach where a box is set back behind thick drywall or tile, but it needs 10-32 tapped holes, not a self-tapping application.
2) Do the Metallics JRM69 screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JRM69 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant; country of origin is listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, these will not satisfy it.
3) Can I drive these Metallics combo screws with a Phillips bit, or do I need a slotted screwdriver?
Either. The JRM69 has a combination head, slotted and Phillips in the same recess, so you can run them with a #2 Phillips bit in a drill or finish them off with a flat blade in tight work. The Phillips recess runs 0.182 to 0.195 inch across and 0.093 to 0.119 inch deep; the slot is 0.05 to 0.06 inch wide.
4) How much does the round head on a 10-32 Metallics machine screw stick up, and will it clear a cover plate?
The round head measures 0.334 to 0.359 inch across and sits 0.123 to 0.137 inch above the surface. That domed profile is not flush, so if you need a screw that disappears into a countersunk plate or a flush trim, a round head is the wrong choice; use a flat head instead.
5) How are the Metallics JRM69 screws packaged, and what is the smallest quantity I can buy?
They come in a jar of 100. The order minimum is one jar, so 100 pieces is the smallest buy. The filled jar weighs 0.99 lbs.
6) Are these zinc-plated steel screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The JRM69 is carbon steel with a zinc finish, made from AISI 1006-1022 steel. Zinc plating handles dry indoor and protected locations well. For wet, coastal or washdown environments, specify a stainless machine screw instead; plated steel will eventually corrode there.
7) What is the strength rating on the Metallics JRM69 10-32 screw?
Minimum tensile strength is 60,000 psi, with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100. That is standard low-carbon machine screw strength, fine for mounting devices, straps, enclosures and trim. It is not a graded structural fastener, so do not substitute it where a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt is called out.
8) What trades actually use a 10-32 x 1-1/4 inch combo round head machine screw?
Metallics builds the JRM series for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. Typical uses are mounting devices and plates to boxes, fastening fixture straps and hangers, and attaching covers to tapped sheet metal where the hole is already threaded 10-32.
