Metallics JBSC10321 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How much clearance does the button head need, and will it sit nearly flush in a tight space?
The head measures 0.347 to 0.361 inch across and only 0.091 to 0.101 inch tall, so it stands under a tenth of an inch off the surface. That low profile is why button heads get used on panel covers, enclosure doors, and anywhere a socket cap head would snag, but it is not a flush or countersunk screw. If you need it truly flush with the surface, use a flat head socket screw instead.
2) Is the black finish on these screws a corrosion coating suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
No. The material is alloy steel with a black finish and the screws are supplied plain, meaning there is no plating or protective coating applied. Plain alloy steel will rust in wet or exterior conditions. Keep these to dry interior work, or choose a stainless or zinc-plated screw for damp and outdoor locations.
3) How are these 10-32 x 1 in. screws packaged, and what is the minimum I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 100 pieces, and 100 count is the order minimum. Total weight of the jar is 0.73 lbs. Metallics offers other sizes and quantities by request.
4) Do these Metallics cap screws meet a recognized dimensional spec for submittals?
They are manufactured to ASME B18.3-2012 for socket cap screw dimensions and ANSI/ASME B1.1 for the threads, so head and thread geometry are to published standard, which is what a spec reviewer or MRO buyer standardizing a parts crib is checking for. Hardness is Rockwell C39-44.
5) Are Metallics JBSC10321 screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government or institutional job?
Metallics lists the JBSC10321 as compliant for both Buy American and ARRA purposes. Country of origin is China. If your contract language treats domestic origin and Buy American compliance as the same requirement, verify against your own contract terms, since the two are separate determinations.
6) Is a 1 inch long 10-32 screw long enough to be tensile tested to its rated strength?
Yes. Metallics notes screws must be at least 3 diameters long to be subject to tensile testing, and a 1 inch length on a 10-32 (0.190 inch nominal diameter) is well past that. The published minimum is 2440 lb. The elongation and reduction figures Metallics cites, 8 percent and 35 percent minimum, apply to machined specimens, not to the as-supplied screw.
