Metallics JDS87 10 x 4 in. 5/16 Indented Hex Head Slotted Sharp Point Tapping Screws - Steel Zinc - Each

It's a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, not a self-drilling screw. The point will start in sheet metal and thin stock on its own, but it does not cut its own pilot in heavier material the way a self-drilling point does. For thicker gauge, drill a pilot hole sized to the #10 thread. Thread pitch is 12 threads per inch.

Number 10 diameter, 4 inches long, with a 5/16 indented hex washer head. That length is for reaching through furring, strapping, or layered material into sheet metal behind it. Head height runs 0.105 to 0.12 inch and the integral washer measures 0.384 to 0.414 inch outside diameter, 0.019 to 0.031 inch thick, so it bears on a wider footprint than a plain hex head.

Metallics lists the JDS87 as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, with country of origin China. On federally funded work where the Buy American provision is satisfied by the compliance designation rather than domestic melt and manufacture, that is the record the manufacturer publishes.

Head dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010 and the threads follow ASME B18.6.4, which is the tapping screw thread standard. Steel is AISI 1016 to 1024 case hardened to Rockwell C28-38, with a minimum torsional strength of 48 lb-in. One caveat from Metallics: dimensions for the #9 diameter in this family fall outside ASME B18.6.4.

The JDS87 is zinc plated carbon steel. Zinc plating handles indoor and protected conditions, and brief exposure during construction, but it isn't a marine or sustained-wet finish. For exterior or corrosive environments, specify a stainless or hot dip galvanized fastener instead.
