ASC Engineered Solutions 310047006 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What do the three sizes on the 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 x 1/2 black malleable iron tee mean?
It's a reducing tee with three different female threaded openings: one run end at 1-1/2 inch, the opposite run end at 1-1/4 inch, and the branch outlet at 1/2 inch. So you run 1-1/2 inch pipe into it, continue at 1-1/4 inch, and take a 1/2 inch branch off the side. All three are FPT, so they take male pipe thread on the mating pipe or nipple.
2) Can I use a black malleable iron tee on a potable water line?
No. Black malleable iron is for gas, air, steam, and non-potable service. The black finish has no corrosion protection for water, so it rusts in a domestic water line. For potable water use galvanized malleable iron, copper, or CPVC instead. Black iron is the standard choice for fuel gas piping and fire sprinkler mains.
3) Is this tee approved for fire sprinkler work?
The fitting carries UL/FM recognition, which is what an AHJ looks for on sprinkler piping. It's a standard pattern (STD) Class 150 malleable iron fitting rated per ASME B16.3, cast to ASTM A-197 malleable iron. Confirm the pressure class matches your system design before you commit.
4) Does this fitting meet spec for a gas line called out as Class 150 malleable iron?
It's built to the two specs that call-out normally references: ASME B16.3 for both dimensions and pressure rating, and ASTM A-197 for the malleable iron castings. Strength is listed as STD, which is the standard (Class 150) pattern rather than the heavier 300 class. If the drawing calls for Class 300, this is not the fitting.
5) Why use a reducing tee instead of a full size tee with bushings?
A 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 x 1/2 reducing tee does in one casting what would otherwise take a 1-1/2 inch tee plus two bushings. Fewer joints means fewer leak paths, less makeup length to plan for, and a cleaner result on inspected gas or sprinkler work where some jurisdictions restrict bushings. It also holds the ASME B16.3 center-to-end dimensions, so your pipe cuts come off a published table rather than a guess.
