ASC Engineered Solutions 311009401 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe does the ASC 1-1/4 x 1/2 galvanized malleable iron 90 degree elbow connect?
It's a reducing 90, with a 1-1/4 inch opening on one end and a 1/2 inch opening on the other. Both ends are female pipe thread (FPT), so it threads onto male-threaded pipe nipples or fittings on each side. Use it where a 1-1/4 inch branch has to turn and step down to 1/2 inch in one fitting instead of an elbow plus a bushing.
2) Will this reducing elbow thread onto standard NPT pipe?
Yes. The threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1, which is the standard NPT taper thread spec, so it mates with any standard threaded steel or brass nipple of the matching size. Both ends are female, so you need male threads coming into it on both sides.
3) Is this malleable iron elbow UL listed and FM approved for fire sprinkler work?
It carries UL/FM recognition, which is what an inspector looks for on a wet sprinkler branch line. It's a standard weight (STD) galvanized malleable iron fitting dimensioned and pressure rated to ASME B16.3.
4) Can I use a galvanized malleable iron elbow on a potable water line, or is it only for gas and sprinkler?
The fitting is galvanized malleable iron built to ASTM A-197 with a hot dip galvanized coating per ASTM A-153. Galvanized threaded fittings are used on water and sprinkler service; black malleable iron is the version normally run on gas. Note that this is not a lead free certified brass fitting, so check your local potable water requirements before specifying it on drinking water.
5) What's the difference between this reducing elbow and using a standard 1-1/4 elbow with a bushing?
The reducing 90 does both jobs in one casting, so you have two joints to seal instead of three, and it takes up less room in a tight chase. A bushing arrangement is only worth it when you already have the straight elbow on the truck. Dimensionally the reducing elbow follows ASME B16.3, so its center to face lay length is predictable for layout.
