1) What is the difference between a street elbow and a regular 90 degree elbow?
A street elbow has one female end and one male end, so it threads directly onto a male pipe nipple or fitting outlet without a nipple in between. This ASC Engineered Solutions 1/2 inch black malleable iron 90 has FPT on one end and MPT on the other. A standard 90 elbow is female on both ends and needs a nipple to connect to another fitting. Use the street ell when you need to turn a corner tight against a valve, pump, or manifold outlet and have no room for a nipple.
2) Will this 1/2 inch street elbow thread onto standard black iron pipe?
Yes. Threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1, the NPT standard used on schedule 40 black and galvanized steel pipe, so it mates with any 1/2 inch NPT pipe, nipple or fitting. Both ends are 1/2 inch, so it does not reduce.
3) Is this street ell UL Listed and FM Approved for fire sprinkler piping?
The fitting carries UL/FM recognition, so it is acceptable on fire protection piping where a listed and approved malleable iron fitting is called for. It is rated to ASME B16.3 for pressure and dimensions and is standard class, not extra heavy.
4) Can I use a black malleable iron street elbow on a potable water line?
No. Black malleable iron is for gas, air, steam, and fire protection service. It has no protective coating and will rust in water service. For potable water, use galvanized, copper, PEX or CPVC instead. The black finish here is the plain, uncoated malleable iron finish.
5) Is this a standard or extra heavy (150 or 300 class) malleable iron fitting?
Standard weight. The strength class is STD, which corresponds to the 150 class malleable iron fitting under ASME B16.3. If your drawing calls out a 300 class extra heavy fitting, this is not the right part.
6) Does this ASC fitting meet the ASTM spec my submittal calls for on malleable iron?
Material is furnished to ASTM A-197, the malleable iron casting spec, with dimensions and pressure rating to ASME B16.3 and threads to ASME B1.20.1. Those are the three callouts normally required on a malleable iron fitting submittal.
7) Do I still need pipe dope or tape with this street elbow?
Yes. These are tapered NPT threads per ASME B1.20.1, and tapered threads seal on a compound, not on the metal alone. Use a thread sealant rated for the service (gas-rated dope or PTFE tape on gas lines). The male end of the street ell gets sealant the same as any nipple.
