1) Do the Metallics JSTS28 tapping screws need a pilot hole, or will they cut their own threads in sheet metal?
The JSTS28 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet point, so it forms its own threads in a pre-drilled or punched hole in sheet metal. The point starts the hole but it is not a self-drilling screw, you still need a pilot. Thread count is 11 threads per inch on a #12 diameter, 1 inch long.
2) Will stainless tapping screws cause corrosion if I drive them into aluminum enclosures or steel strut?
They can. Fastening 18-8 stainless parts to aluminum or steel can set up a galvanic couple in some environments, which corrodes the softer metal at the joint. In dry interior electrical work that is usually a non issue; in damp, coastal or chemically aggressive locations, isolate the joint or match the fastener metal to the base metal.
3) Can I use these on a Buy American or ARRA funded job?
No. The JSTS28 screws are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. For federally funded work carrying those clauses you need a domestically sourced fastener instead.
4) How much torque can a #12 18-8 stainless slotted pan head tapping screw take before it snaps?
Minimum torsional strength on the JSTS28 is 83 lb-in. That is the driving limit, and with a slotted drive it is easy to cam out or twist off with an impact driver. Run these with a hand screwdriver or a clutched driver set low.
5) What standards do these Metallics tapping screws follow?
Head and drive dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2013, and the thread form follows ASME B18.6.4. Note that Metallics states dimensions for #9 diameter are independent of ASME B18.6.4, so that caveat applies to other diameters in the JSTS series, not to this #12.
