1) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTSF33 #12 tapping screws?
A #3 Phillips bit. The JTSF33 uses a Phillips drive with a #3 driver size, and the recess measures 0.262 inch diameter by 0.144 inch deep with a 0.035 inch slot width. Running a #2 bit in a #3 recess is how you cam out and chew the head, so stock the right bit before you start the run.
2) Do I have to drill a pilot hole for a Type A tapping screw, or does it self-start?
The JTSF33 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet point, so it forms its own thread in a pilot hole in sheet metal. The gimlet point starts easily and cuts through thin gauge stock, but it is a thread-forming screw, not a self-drilling point with a drill flute, so you still pre-punch or pre-drill sheet heavier than light gauge. Thread pitch is 11 threads per inch.
