The Metallics JTSP86 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, so it needs a pilot hole in sheet metal, it will not drill its own. The sharp point does let it start in soft materials like wood or fiberboard without a pilot. At 11 threads per inch the thread is coarse, which suits thin gauge metal, wood, and plastic rather than thick steel. If you need to go through structural steel without pre-drilling, you want a self-drilling screw instead.
