Metallics JRM133 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I drive the Metallics JRM133 machine screw with a Phillips bit, or does it need a flat blade?
Either one. The JRM133 is a combo head, slotted and Phillips in the same recess, so a flat blade or a Phillips driver both work. Use a #3 Phillips bit for the recess; the slot runs 0.064 to 0.075 inch wide and 0.082 to 0.109 inch deep, which suits a medium cabinet-tip flat blade. Handy on panel and device work where you only have one driver in the pouch.
2) Will a 1/4-20 x 5 inch round head machine screw thread into standard 1/4-20 tapped holes and nuts?
Yes. The JRM133 is a 1/4-20 machine screw, meaning 1/4 inch nominal diameter at 20 threads per inch, the standard UNC coarse pitch. It mates with any 1/4-20 tapped hole, nut, strut nut, or threaded insert. At 5 inches of length it is meant for stacking through thick assemblies or standoffs, so size your grip and add a nut and washer as the job needs.
3) How much clearance does the round head need, and will it sit flush?
It will not sit flush. A round head stands proud of the surface by design: head height measures 0.16 to 0.175 inch, with a head width of 0.443 to 0.472 inch. If you need the fastener flush or recessed in the material, you want a flat head machine screw in a countersunk hole instead. Round head is the right pick where the head bears on the surface and you want the extra seating area.
4) What is the strength rating on the Metallics JRM133, and is it strong enough for structural fastening?
Tensile strength is 60,000 psi minimum, with hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That is standard commercial machine screw strength, suitable for mounting equipment, enclosures, and device assemblies. It is not a graded structural bolt, so for load-bearing structural connections use a rated hex bolt instead.
5) Does the JRM133 come loose or by the box, and is there a minimum order?
Sold in a jar of 100, and 100 count is the order minimum. Useful for MRO cribs and shop stock where you are pulling 1/4-20 hardware regularly rather than buying a handful for one job.
6) Will a #2 Phillips bit cam out on these combo screws?
Likely, yes. The Phillips recess on the JRM133 measures 0.255 to 0.268 inch in diameter at 0.121 to 0.147 inch deep, which calls for a #3 Phillips driver. A #2 will not seat fully in that recess and can cam out under torque on a 1/4-20 thread. Keep a #3 bit on the driver, or use the slot.
7) Do these Metallics machine screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
The JRM133 is flagged compliant for both ARRA and Buy American, with country of origin listed as China. If your contract carries a domestic-source clause, review those two flags against the specific clause language your project is written under before you submit the fastener on a submittal package.
