ASC Engineered Solutions 310079801 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What thread does the ASC 1/4 inch black malleable iron coupling take?
Both ends are 1/4 inch FPT, cut to ASME B1.20.1, which is standard NPT tapered pipe thread. It joins two lengths of 1/4 inch male-threaded black steel or black iron pipe. Use pipe dope or PTFE tape on the threads; tapered NPT seals on the threads, not on a gasket face.
2) Can I use a black malleable iron coupling on a potable water line?
No. Black malleable iron is used for gas, air, steam, and other non-potable service. Black iron corrodes in wet potable systems and is not a lead-free potable fitting. For domestic water, use brass, copper, CPVC, or PEX. For wet fire sprinkler or water service where iron is specified, galvanized is the usual call.
3) Is this coupling a reducing coupling or straight 1/4 by 1/4?
Straight. Both ends are 1/4 inch, so it couples same-size pipe. If you need to step down from 1/2 or 3/8 to 1/4, you want a reducing coupling or a bushing instead, not this fitting.
4) Will this coupling join black pipe to galvanized pipe?
Mechanically yes, since the threads are the same NPT profile on both. But mixing black iron and galvanized in a wet system sets up galvanic corrosion at the joint, so keep the materials consistent within a system and use a dielectric fitting where you genuinely have to transition.
