Metallics JTSF61 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is a Type A tapping screw the right choice for sheet metal, or do I need a self-drilling screw?
The JTSF61 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet point, so it forms its own thread in a pre-punched or pre-drilled hole in thin sheet metal. It is not self-drilling. If you need the fastener to cut through the metal without a pilot hole, use a self-drilling (Type TEK) screw instead. For electrical work where the box, strap, or panel already has a punched hole, the Type A is what gets used.
2) Do these Metallics tapping screws meet Buy American requirements for a federal or public project?
The JTSF61 is flagged Buy American compliant and ARRA compliant in the manufacturer data, which is what a government, school, or healthcare procurement officer needs on the submittal. Country of origin is listed as multiple.
3) Is the #14 tapping screw dimensionally standard, so another brand's #14 will match on a repair?
Yes. The JTSF61 is built to ASME B18.6.4-1998 for dimensions and ASME B18.6.4 for threads, with a gaging diameter of 0.41 inch and protrusion gaging 0.029 to 0.049 inch above. Any other #14 Type A tapping screw built to the same standard will interchange in the same hole. Note that Metallics states its #9 diameter screws are independent of ASME B18.6.4, so that size is the exception in the series.
4) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTSF61 #14 flat head Phillips tapping screw?
A #3 Phillips bit. The recess is 0.276 inch in diameter, 0.16 inch deep and 0.036 inch wide, so a #2 bit will cam out and chew the recess on a screw this size. Keep a #3 in the bag if you are driving these with an impact.
5) How tough are these screws, and will they snap if I overdrive them?
The JTSF61 is case hardened to Rockwell C28-38 from AISI 1016-1024 steel, with a minimum torsional strength of 125 lb-in. That is the torque the screw will take before twisting off, so set the clutch on a driver rather than leaning on an impact gun in hard stock.
6) Are these zinc plated screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
These are steel with a zinc plated finish, which is a general purpose indoor corrosion coating. Fine for dry interior electrical work, panel and box mounting, and strapping. For exterior, wet, or coastal exposure, specify a stainless or hot dip galvanized fastener instead; plain zinc will bloom and rust in standing moisture.
7) Can I buy the JTSF61 screws in less than 100?
No. The order minimum is 100 count, supplied in a jar. If you need a different size or a different quantity, Metallics offers other sizes and quantities in the JTSF series by request.
8) What is the thread pitch on the Metallics #14 x 1-1/2 in. tapping screw?
10 threads per inch, to ASME B18.6.4. That is the standard Type A pitch for a #14 and it is the coarse spacing that lets the screw form a thread in thin gauge metal rather than strip it.
9) How much does a jar of 100 of these screws weigh for shipping or a stock bin?
A jar runs 1.46 lbs for the 100 count, and the jar itself is about 3 x 2.7 x 3 inches, so it drops into a standard van shelf bin without repacking.
