Philips Lighting 470112 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Philips 14W T8 LED tube work in my existing fluorescent fixture without rewiring?
The Philips 470112 InstantFit tube is a plug-and-play lamp for a G13 medium bi-pin socket, so it drops straight into a standard 4-foot T8 fixture and runs off the existing ballast. It's compatible with over 350 ballasts and drivers. If you'd rather get the ballast out of the maintenance picture, the same tube supports ballast bypass or UL Type C driver installation, but neither is required to put it in service.
2) Is the 14W Philips LED tube bright enough to replace a 32W F32T8 fluorescent?
At 2100 lumens, the 14W tube lands in the same working light range as the 32-watt linear fluorescent it's replacing, at roughly a third of the wattage. Rated efficacy is 150 lm/W. Over a 100-lamp office retrofit that wattage gap is where the payback sits, and the lamp is DLC Standard listed for utility rebate purposes.
3) Will 4000K match the other tubes in my building, or is it too cool?
4000K cool white is the neutral commercial standard, the color you'll find in most office, school, and retail ceilings. It reads white without the blue cast of 5000K daylight or the yellow of 3500K. CRI is 82. If your existing lamps are labelled 841 or 840, this is the same color family and will match them in a shared space; if they're 830 or 850, expect a visible difference between fixtures.
4) How do I know if my existing ballast will drive this InstantFit tube?
Two numbers decide it. The lamp draws between 100 mA and 260 mA, and it accepts a ballast output frequency of 25,000 to 105,000 Hz. That covers instant-start and programmed-start electronic T8 ballasts, which is why Philips lists compatibility with over 350 ballasts and drivers. Old magnetic ballasts run well below that frequency band and are not compatible, so a fixture still on a magnetic ballast needs a bypass or Type C conversion instead.
5) Can I put this Philips T8 LED tube on a dimmer?
Yes, the 470112 is a dimmable tube, which is unusual for an InstantFit lamp. Dimming happens through the ballast or driver it's running on, not through the lamp itself, so the control has to be a dimming ballast or a dimming UL Type C driver. Putting a dimmable tube on a fixed-output ballast just gives you full output.
6) Will this Philips LED tube hold up in an unheated warehouse or parking garage?
Ambient operating range is -20C to 45C, so an unheated garage, loading dock, or cold warehouse is within spec at both ends. Storage tolerance runs wider at -40C to 65C, which covers a truck or an unconditioned stockroom. Max case temperature is 50C, so the one place to be careful is a tightly enclosed or lensed fixture in an already hot space.
7) Can I use this tube on 347V Canadian building power?
Voltage compatibility is 120-277V plus 347V, so it covers standard US commercial circuits and the 347V service common in Canadian commercial buildings. Note that the voltage feeds the ballast or driver, not the lamp directly, so the ballast in the fixture has to be rated for that supply too.
8) How long before I have to relamp these, and how much light do they lose?
Nominal lifetime is 50,000 hours, and at that point the tube still puts out 70 percent of its initial 2100 lumens. On a 12-hour-a-day office schedule that's over a decade of service. The lamp is also rated for 50,000 switching cycles, so it's suited to spaces on occupancy sensors where fluorescent lamps used to fail early from cycling.
9) Does this Philips tube qualify for a utility rebate?
The 470112 carries DLC Standard listing, which is the qualification most utility prescriptive rebate programs require for a linear LED replacement lamp. The specific rebate amount depends on your utility, but the product-side requirement is met. It's also RoHS compliant, which matters on institutional and government specs.
10) Is 82 CRI good enough for a retail space or a medical exam room?
82 CRI is the standard commercial rendering level, fine for offices, warehouses, corridors, parking structures, and general retail. Where color judgment is part of the work, apparel retail, paint and finish selection, or clinical exam areas, most specs call for 90 CRI or better, and this lamp won't meet that. Color consistency is under 6 SDCM, so lamp-to-lamp appearance across a ceiling will be tight.
