ASC Engineered Solutions 310008800 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the ASC 1 x 3/8 black malleable iron 90 degree elbow a reducing fitting, and which end is which size?
It's a reducing elbow: one end takes 1 inch pipe, the other 3/8 inch. Both ends are female pipe thread (FPT), so pipe threads directly into each side, no coupling needed. Use it where you're stepping a 1 inch run down to a 3/8 inch branch and turning 90 degrees in the same fitting.
2) Can I use a black malleable iron elbow on a fire sprinkler line?
This one is UL/FM listed, so it's acceptable for fire protection piping where a listed threaded fitting is required. It's black malleable iron, the usual material for dry sprinkler and standpipe work. Black iron is not for potable water.
3) Is this a Class 150 standard fitting or extra heavy?
Standard pattern (STD), not extra heavy. Pressure rating follows ASME B16.3, which is the rating basis for threaded malleable iron fittings. If your spec calls for a Class 300 extra-heavy fitting, this one won't meet it.
4) Can I use this black elbow on a gas line or a hydronic heating loop?
Black malleable iron threaded fittings are the standard choice for gas piping and for closed-loop hydronic and steam work, and this is a black-finish malleable iron fitting made to ASME B16.3 with NPT threads. Use pipe dope or tape rated for the service you're piping. For domestic water, go galvanized or copper instead, not black.
5) What is the malleable iron in this elbow actually made to, and is it the same as cast iron?
The casting conforms to ASTM A-197, the spec for cupola malleable iron fittings. That's a different, more ductile material than gray cast iron, which is why malleable iron takes threading and handles vibration and handling on a jobsite without cracking the way a brittle casting would.
6) How much does one 1 x 3/8 black reducing elbow weigh for a bulk order?
Each elbow is 0.41 lbs. Handy if you're pricing freight or calculating hanger loads on a long run with a lot of fittings.
