Steel City 72171-1234RD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Why is this Steel City box painted red instead of galvanized?
Red is the convention for fire alarm and life safety circuits, and the 72171-1234RD ships red from the factory so the system is identifiable at a glance during inspection. It is a steel box with a red finish, not a plastic one, so it still takes standard 4-11/16 square covers and device rings.
2) For an outdoor wet-location receptacle, is the Steel City 72171-1234RD the right box?
No. The 72171-1234RD is a painted steel square box for interior general-purpose wiring. For an exterior receptacle, the Mulberry Royal Mountie weatherproof outlet box is a 1-gang die-cast aluminum weatherproof box, and the Thomas and Betts 2IH3-1 Red-Dot is a 2-gang conduit outlet box with three 1/2 inch hubs for threaded conduit entry. Those two are hubbed or weatherproof bodies, while the Steel City box uses knockouts, so connector and sealing details differ.
3) Is this red 4-11/16 box UL listed?
Yes. The 72171-1234RD carries UL file E2969, which is the listing a jurisdiction will look for when the box is used on a fire alarm or signaling circuit.
4) How many knockouts does the Steel City 72171-1234RD have, and will that cover a through-run plus a drop?
Sixteen knockouts, spread across the sides and back, so a through-run in and out plus one or two branch drops is no problem without adding a box extension. Count the openings you need against the 42 cubic inch fill before you commit to a single box.
5) Will a plastic box work in place of this steel one for fire alarm rough-in?
Not interchangeably. The 72171-1234RD is steel, so it bonds to the raceway system and supports EMT or MC terminations through its knockouts. A nonmetallic box like the Cantex EZ Series PVC multi-gang residential box is intended for nonmetallic residential wiring and will not serve a metallic fire alarm raceway.
6) Is the Steel City 72171-1234RD sold individually or by the case?
It is sold each, so you can order the exact count a job needs rather than a full carton. By contrast the Thomas & Betts 2IH3-1 Red-Dot box is a pack of 100.
7) Is this box made in the USA?
Yes, the 72171-1234RD is manufactured in the United States, which matters on public and institutional jobs carrying domestic sourcing requirements.
