Polaris ITO-4 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Polaris ITO-4 connector be used on aluminum wire, or is it copper only?
Both. The ITO-4 is dual rated AL9CU, so it takes copper or aluminum conductors, and each port comes pre-filled with oxide inhibitor gel, which is what makes the aluminum connection hold up. The ranges differ though: copper is 4 AWG to 14 AWG, aluminum is 4 AWG to 12 AWG. If you're landing 14 AWG aluminum, this isn't the connector.
2) What amperage can I run through a Polaris ITO-4 multi-tap connector?
Rated to 95 amps on copper and 75 amps on aluminum, at 600 volts. The lower aluminum figure tracks the smaller aluminum range it accepts, so size the run against the metal you're actually splicing, not the higher number.
3) How many wires does the Polaris ITO-4 take, and can I use it to tap a feeder?
Two conductors, one per port, so it's a straight splice rather than a multi-way tap block. Line in one side, load out the other. If you need to pull two or three taps off a single feeder, you want a connector with more ports, not this one.
4) What size hex wrench and what torque do I need to install a Polaris ITO-4?
A 1/8 inch hex key, torqued to 35 in-lbs. That's the whole tool list. Pull the plugs off the ports and the set screw, land the wire, torque it, and press the plugs back in to keep moisture and debris out of the connector.
5) Can I use the Polaris ITO-4 connector outdoors or in an unheated space?
Yes. The plastisol insulation on the ITO-4 is UV, abrasion and chemical resistant, and the connector carries a cold temperature rating to -45C with a 90C upper temperature rating. That covers unheated mechanical rooms, parking structures, rooftop runs and buried or overhead line splices.
6) Does the ITO-4 need to go in a box, or is the insulation enough on its own?
The connector is fully pre-insulated in plastisol rated 600V, so the splice is insulated as it comes, with no tape or heat shrink required to finish it. That's the point of the pre-insulated body versus a bare split-bolt, which still needs a proper taping job after it's torqued.
7) What does the offset entry on the Polaris ITO-4 actually do for the install?
The two ports enter at an offset rather than in line, so the conductors come in staggered. That helps when you're splicing in a tight junction box or panel gutter and can't get both wires to approach the connector on the same axis. The body itself is compact at 1.21 x 1.37 x 1.36 inches, with rounded corners and a smooth exterior so it isn't fighting you in the hand.
8) Will a Polaris ITO-4 accept compact stranded or Class C cable?
The ITO-4 is rated for Class B and Class C stranded conductor within its 4 to 14 AWG copper range. Solid or heavily compacted conductor outside those classes is a different question, so match the cable class on your wire spool to what the connector states.
9) Is the Polaris ITO-4 made in the USA?
Yes, country of origin is the United States. That matters on federal, municipal and other publicly funded work where domestic sourcing is written into the spec.
10) Is the black Polaris ITO-4 the UV coated version?
It is. The ITO-4 is the black, UV-coated pre-insulated connector, one model with no finish or color options to pick from. If you're standardizing a stock room on a single splice connector for outdoor and sunlit runs, this is the one to write on the order.
