ASC Engineered Solutions 310530605 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and thread type are the openings on the ASC Engineered Solutions 2 inch black malleable iron cross?
All four outlets are 2 inch FPT, female NPT threads cut to ASME B1.20.1. That means it takes standard 2 inch threaded black steel or black iron pipe on every branch, no reducing outlets. It mates with male pipe nipples or male-threaded fittings in the same 2 inch size.
2) Is this 2 inch malleable iron cross rated for fire sprinkler work?
It carries UL/FM approval, which is what an inspector looks for on fire protection piping. Combine that with the extra heavy (XH) wall rating and the ASME B16.3 pressure rating basis, and it is built for the higher working pressures a sprinkler or standpipe branch sees. Confirm the fitting matches what the drawing calls out for your system.
3) Can I use this black malleable iron cross on a domestic water line?
No. Black malleable iron is for non-potable service, gas, and fire protection piping; the black finish has no corrosion protection against wet potable water and it is not a potable-rated material. For water supply use galvanized, copper, or brass. Black malleable is the right call for dry systems, sprinkler branch lines, and black steel pipe runs.
4) What material grade is the ASC 2 inch XH cross made to?
Malleable iron produced to ASTM A-197, with dimensions and pressure rating per ASME B16.3. Those are the three callouts an engineer or inspector will ask for on a submittal, and they are what distinguishes a spec-grade fitting from an unmarked import.
5) How heavy is a 2 inch extra heavy black malleable cross?
About 6.49 lbs each. Worth knowing for overhead work: a run of these on a sprinkler main adds real load, so size your hangers and plan the lift accordingly. It also matters when you are pricing freight on a full box for a job.
6) What is the part number for the ASC Engineered Solutions 2 inch XH black cross?
The manufacturer part number is 310530605. Use that when matching a submittal or reordering to keep the same extra heavy black malleable cross across a job.
