ASC Engineered Solutions 310090600 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the ASC 2-1/2 x 1 black malleable iron reducing coupling female threaded on both ends?
Both ends are FPT (female pipe thread), so it threads onto male pipe ends or nipples on each side. It takes 2-1/2 inch pipe on the large end and 1 inch on the small end, with threads cut to ASME B1.20.1 NPT.
2) Can I use this black malleable iron reducer on a fire sprinkler line?
It's UL/FM approved, which is what an AHJ looks for on sprinkler piping. It's standard (STD) class black malleable iron built to ASME B16.3 for dimensions and pressure rating, with NPT threads per ASME B1.20.1. Black iron is the usual choice for wet sprinkler and black steel pipe systems; use galvanized fittings where the spec calls for corrosion protection.
3) Is a black malleable iron reducer OK for potable water?
No. This is black (uncoated) malleable iron, intended for black steel pipe systems such as gas, air, sprinkler and hydronic heating. For domestic water, use galvanized or a copper/brass fitting instead, per whatever your local code allows.
4) What is the difference between this reducing coupling and using a bushing to go from 2-1/2 inch to 1 inch?
A reducing coupling like this one has two female NPT ends and makes the 2-1/2 to 1 inch transition in one body between two male pipe ends. A bushing is male on the large side and female on the small side, so it threads into a fitting or valve port rather than onto pipe. Pick the coupling when you're joining two runs of pipe, the bushing when you're reducing a tapping in an existing fitting.
5) Will this ASC reducer match the dimensions of other brands of malleable iron fittings on my job?
It's manufactured to ASME B16.3, the dimensional standard for malleable iron threaded fittings, so face-to-face lay length and thread engagement follow the same standard as other B16.3 fittings. Material is to ASTM A-197 malleable iron. Mixing brands within B16.3 is normal on commercial work.
