Southwire SPH250-18 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conductor size is the Southwire SPH250-18 SIMpull head made for?
The SPH250-18 is sized for 250 kcmil conductor. Southwire builds the SIMpull head line in sizes from 1 AWG up through 1000 kcmil, so if you are pulling a different conductor size you need the head matched to that size rather than this one. The head is not adjustable across sizes.
2) How long is the SIMpull pulling head, and will it clear a tight conduit bend?
The pulling head measures 12.6 inches of extension with a height of 1.6 inches and a width of 3.9 inches. Southwire designates it an 18 inch pulling device and calls it the lowest profile head available, which is the point of the design: the flatter the head, the easier it rides through sweeps and bends and the less it hangs up at the coupling.
3) Will the 250 kcmil SIMpull head work if my conductors are 350 kcmil?
No. Order the head that matches the conductor. The SPH250-18 is cut for 250 kcmil only; Southwire offers the SIMpull head in sizes from 1 AWG to 1000 kcmil, so a 350 kcmil pull needs the 350 head. Mixing sizes risks the head pulling off the conductor mid pull.
4) Do SIMpull heads come one at a time or in a pack?
They come packed five to an inner pack, in cardboard. For a three phase plus neutral pull you would normally fit four heads of the matching conductor size, so a five pack covers a four wire pull with a spare.
5) Why do SIMpull heads have staggered lengths?
Staggered lengths are what let multiple heads enter the conduit without bunching into one fat bundle at the mouth. Each conductor's head sits at a different point along the pull, so the cross section stays small and the pull rope load stays in line. That is the time saving Southwire is claiming over field built heads taped and basket gripped on site.
6) Is this a reusable pulling grip or a one time head?
The SPH250-18 is a factory pulling head, not a reusable basket grip. It attaches to the conductor end and goes through the conduit with it, which is why it is sold in multi packs rather than as a single tool. If you want a device you take off and use on the next pull, a woven wire mesh pulling grip sized to the cable OD is the other approach.
7) What is the Southwire pulling head made of, and is it rated for commercial work?
Steel construction, silver in color, and Southwire classes it as a commercial product. It weighs 0.672 pounds, light enough that the head itself adds almost nothing to the tension on the rope.
8) Does the SIMpull head need batteries or contain mercury?
No. The pulling head is a mechanical steel device, no batteries included or required, and no mercury content, so there is nothing to declare on a facility hazardous materials list.
