1) What kind of connection does the Viega MegaPress 25620 adapter have on each end?
The 25620 adapter is a P x FPT fitting: one press end at 1-1/2 inch and a female NPT thread at 1-1/4 inch. So it presses onto 1-1/2 inch carbon steel pipe on one side and takes a male-threaded 1-1/4 inch nipple, valve, or component on the other. That makes it the transition piece when you are running pressed black iron and need to land on threaded equipment.
2) Why does the MegaPress adapter step down from 1-1/2 inch to 1-1/4 inch?
The two numbers are not a reducer in the usual sense, they describe the two different connections. 1-1/2 inch is the press socket size and 1-1/4 inch is the female thread size, so flow does neck down at the threaded outlet. If you need to keep full 1-1/2 inch bore through to the threads, this is the wrong adapter and you want a 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 press-by-FPT instead.
3) How much room do I need around a Viega 25620 adapter in a tight chase?
The body measures 3.413 inches long by 2.437 inches wide and 2.437 inches high, and it weighs 0.838 lbs. Allow clearance beyond that for the press jaw to swing fully around the fitting, which is usually the limiting factor in a crowded chase or close to a wall or joist, not the fitting itself.
4) Will a carbon steel MegaPress fitting work on a copper or PEX system?
No. The 25620 is carbon steel and belongs on carbon steel pipe. For copper you need Viega's copper press line (ProPress), and for PEX a PureFlow fitting. Mixing a carbon steel press fitting onto copper is the wrong material pairing and the press profile is not the same.
