ABB Mechanically Held Lighting Contactor Conversion Kit, 2-Wire 120V Control Module

The ABB 2-Wire Control Module Kit converts electrically held lighting contactors to a mechanically held configuration, reducing coil energization time and audible hum in lighting control circuits. This conversion kit operates on a Control Circuit Voltage of 110-120 Vac with 2-wire Control Circuit Wiring, and supports a Coil Voltage Range of 24-277 Vac, covering coil voltages of 277V and below on the lighting contactor being converted. For line voltage above 277V, use a CPT (control power transformer) to reduce coil voltage to a compatible level before wiring the module. This makes the kit a practical retrofit path for facilities standardizing on mechanically held lighting contactors to cut down on coil hum and holding-current power draw.

Key Features

  • Control Circuit Voltage: 110-120 Vac control circuit voltage powers the mechanically held conversion module.
  • Control Circuit Wiring: 2-wire control circuit wiring simplifies field wiring for mechanically held operation, reducing the number of conductors an installer must land in the enclosure.
  • Coil Voltage Range: 24-277 Vac coil voltage range supports a wide range of lighting contactors; use a CPT to step down coil voltage when line voltage exceeds 277V.
  • Auxiliary Contacts: Includes (1) 1 Pole auxiliary contact required for the feedback loop; alternate 2 pole auxiliary contact blocks are available separately for status feedback and/or pilot light indication.
  • Complete Conversion Kit: Includes control module, latch, latch cover, and auxiliary contact(s) plus installation instructions for a straightforward conversion from electrically held to mechanically held operation without replacing the entire contactor.
  • Packaging: Packaged 1 EA for convenient ordering and inventory management on electrical maintenance and retrofit projects.

Technical Specifications

  • Refer to manufacturer documentation for complete technical specifications.

Typical Applications

  • Lighting Contactor Conversions
  • Commercial and Industrial Lighting Control Circuits
  • Mechanically Held Contactor Retrofits
  • Electrical Panel and Control Circuit Upgrades

ABB CR460XMC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the ABB CR460XMC control module kit actually do to a lighting contactor?
The CR460XMC kit converts an electrically held lighting contactor to mechanically held operation. Instead of the coil staying energized the whole time the lights are on, the mechanical latch holds the contacts closed, which cuts the coil hum and the holding-current draw. You keep the existing contactor, you just add the module, latch, latch cover and auxiliary contact.
2) My lighting contactor has a 480V coil. Can I use this 2-wire conversion kit on it?
Not directly. The kit's coil voltage range is 24-277 Vac, so it covers coils of 277V and below. For anything above 277V you need a CPT (control power transformer) to step the coil voltage down to something inside that range before you wire the module in.
3) What control circuit voltage does the ABB CR460XMC module need?
The module itself runs on a 110-120 Vac control circuit, wired 2-wire. That is separate from the coil voltage of the contactor you are converting, which can be anywhere in the 24-277 Vac range. So a 120V control source feeds the module regardless of whether the contactor coil is 24V, 120V, 208V or 277V.
4) Do I have to replace the whole lighting contactor to get mechanically held operation?
No. That is the point of this kit. The CR460XMC mounts to the existing electrically held contactor and adds the latch and control module, so the power poles, enclosure and line/load terminations stay as they are. For a facility standardizing several lighting panels on mechanically held operation, it avoids re-terminating feeders on every unit.
5) How many conductors do I have to pull for a mechanically held conversion with this kit?
Two. The CR460XMC is the 2-wire control version, so the field wiring back to the switch or control point is a two-conductor run rather than the three-wire arrangement other mechanically held schemes use. For a retrofit in an existing panel with limited raceway space, that is usually the deciding factor.
6) What comes in the box with the ABB CR460XMC conversion kit?
Control module, latch, latch cover, the auxiliary contact, and installation instructions. It is packaged 1 each. You supply the control wiring and, where the coil voltage exceeds 277V, the control power transformer.
7) Will converting to mechanically held stop the buzzing coming from my lighting panel?
That is the usual reason for doing it. On an electrically held contactor the coil stays energized the entire time the lights are on, which is what produces the audible hum. Converting with the CR460XMC energizes the coil only long enough to throw the latch, so the hum and the continuous holding current both go away.
8) Can I wire a pilot light to show whether the lighting contactor is on after this conversion?
Yes, but plan the aux contacts. The single 1-pole auxiliary contact that ships with the kit is consumed by the feedback loop the module needs. For pilot light indication or a status signal on top of that, add one of the separately available 2-pole auxiliary contact blocks.
