1) Is this ASC malleable iron 90 degree elbow a reducing fitting, and which port is which size?
It's a reducing elbow: one end is 2 inch and the other is 1-1/4 inch, both female pipe thread. You use it where a 2 inch line has to turn 90 degrees and step down to 1-1/4 inch in the same fitting, instead of running an elbow plus a separate reducing bushing.
2) Can I use a black malleable iron 90 elbow on a potable water line?
No. Black malleable iron fittings are for gas, air, steam, and dry or non-potable service. The black finish here is uncoated iron with no corrosion protection, so it will rust in water service. For potable water use a galvanized or a brass/copper fitting instead.
3) Is this ASC 90 elbow approved for fire sprinkler piping?
It carries UL/FM approval, so it can be used in fire protection piping where UL Listed and FM Approved fittings are specified. It is a standard weight (STD) malleable iron fitting rated to ASME B16.3.
4) What is the difference between a standard and an extra heavy malleable iron elbow, and which is this one?
This is the standard weight version, marked STD. Standard class malleable fittings are rated to ASME B16.3 and cover most gas, air, and general service work. Extra heavy (Class 300) fittings have thicker walls and a higher pressure rating and are specified when the drawing calls for Class 300; they aren't interchangeable on a spec job even though the threads are the same.
5) Does this fitting meet the ASTM and ASME callouts on my plumbing spec?
The iron is made to ASTM A-197 (malleable iron castings), the fitting dimensions and pressure class follow ASME B16.3, and the threads follow ASME B1.20.1. Those are the three callouts normally written on a mechanical spec for a black malleable fitting.
