Watts 274598 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 3/4 inch Watts 174A relief valve thread into my boiler tapping and discharge piping?
Both ends are 3/4 inch female NPT, inlet and outlet. So it screws onto a 3/4 inch male NPT nipple out of the boiler tapping, and the drain line lands in the 3/4 inch female outlet. If your boiler tapping is female, you need a close nipple. Keep the discharge pipe full 3/4 inch size and run it down to within a few inches of the floor with no valve in the line.
2) How big a boiler will the Watts 0274598 relief valve cover?
Rated steam discharge capacity is 1,320,000 BTU per hour. Size by the boiler's gross output or input rating as your code official requires: the valve's relieving capacity must equal or exceed it. Anything above that number and you go to a larger valve or add a second one.
3) What is the maximum temperature the Watts 174A bronze relief valve can handle?
250 degrees F maximum. That covers normal hot water boiler service, where system water runs well below boiling under pressure. The body is bronze, so it holds up in closed-loop heating water without the corrosion you would get from a plain steel part.
4) Does the Watts 0274598 come with a test lever for annual testing?
Yes, it has a manual test lever. That lets a maintenance tech lift the disc to verify the valve is free and flush debris off the seat without draining the system. Most facility maintenance programs call for exercising a boiler relief valve on a set interval, and this valve is built for it.
5) Can I install the Watts 174A relief valve on its side or does it have to be vertical?
Mount it upright, stem vertical, threaded directly into a tapping on the top of the boiler or in the supply piping as close to the boiler as possible. No shutoff valve between the boiler and the relief valve, and nothing restricting the 3/4 inch outlet. Installing one of these horizontally or on an extended run of pipe is the most common reason a relief valve weeps or fails to reseat.
