ASC Engineered Solutions 310513809 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the ASC 3/4 inch black malleable iron 45 degree street elbow female on one end and male on the other?
Yes. The 45 degree street ell has one FPT (female) end and one MPT (male) end, both 3/4 inch. That lets you thread the male end straight into a female fitting or valve without an added nipple, which is the whole point of a street ell in tight work.
2) What does XH mean on a black malleable iron fitting, and do I need it instead of standard?
XH is extra heavy, the 300 class malleable iron pattern. It has thicker walls and a higher pressure rating than the standard 150 class fitting of the same size, and dimensionally it is a different, bulkier body. Spec it where the drawing calls for 300 class or extra heavy; if the job only calls for standard weight black iron, the 150 class version is what you want. Both are built to ASME B16.3.
3) Is this fitting OK for natural gas or water, and will the black finish rust?
Black malleable iron is the standard material for gas and for dry or low-corrosion service; the black finish is a mill coating, not a corrosion barrier, so it is not the choice for wet outdoor or potable water runs where galvanized or brass is used instead. Material is ASTM A-197 malleable iron with a black finish.
4) Why use a 45 degree street ell instead of two 90s?
A 45 turns the run half as sharply, which keeps pressure drop down and lets you offset around an obstruction without stacking two 90s and a nipple. Because this one is a street pattern (FPT one end, MPT the other), the male end screws directly into the next fitting, so you save a nipple and a couple of inches of takeout in a tight chase.
5) Do I need to check the pipe size on both ends of this street elbow?
Both ends are 3/4 inch, so it is a straight ell, not a reducing one. If your run steps down from 3/4 to 1/2, you need a reducing fitting or a bushing in addition to this.
