Brady 3420-3 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How many labels come on a Brady 3420-3 card, and are they all the number 3?
One card per pack, with 32 die-cut labels on it, and every one is the numeral 3. The 3420-3 is a single-character card, so if you are numbering panels or conductors 1 through 6 you need the matching card for each digit.
2) Will Brady 3420-3 wire markers come off later without leaving residue on the conductor?
Yes, that is the point of the CleanLift B-498 vinyl cloth construction. The repositionable rubber adhesive holds on a clean dry surface but lifts clean, so you can pull a marker off a conductor mid-pull and re-stick it in the right place instead of scrapping it. Useful for temporary circuit tagging during troubleshooting or commissioning.
3) Can I apply these Brady number labels in a cold mechanical room or outdoors in winter?
Application needs 50 F (10 C) or warmer for the adhesive to grab. Once it is on and bonded, the label holds in service from -40 F to 176 F (-40 C to 80 C). So an unheated crawlspace or rooftop job in January means warming the surface first, or applying indoors before the wire goes out.
4) What size is each label on the Brady 3420-3 card, and will it wrap a small conductor?
Each die-cut label is 0.75 x 0.563 in (19.1 x 14.3 mm) and 0.0073 in (0.185 mm) thick. The printed character stands 0.625 in (15.9 mm). At that footprint it is a flag or partial wrap on small gauge conductors rather than a full overlap band, so on THHN branch circuit wire expect to butt or slightly overlap the ends.
5) Do I need a label printer for Brady 3420 series markers?
No printer, no software, no ribbon. The 3420 series ships pre-printed and die-cut on cards, self-adhesive, so you peel and stick. That is the difference between these and blank printable wire marker stock, and it is why a service tech carries them in the van.
6) Will these Brady wire markers survive a wash-down or a plant environment with chemicals?
The B-498 vinyl cloth is abrasion, chemical, corrosion, humidity and UV resistant, so it tolerates a light industrial environment and sunlight better than a paper marker. Keep in mind the adhesive is deliberately repositionable, not permanent, so for a marker that must never be removed choose a permanent-adhesive wire marker instead.
7) Will Brady 3420 labels stick to plastic conduit and other low surface energy materials?
Yes. The material is rated for low surface energy surfaces, which covers plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene where ordinary label stock tends to lift at the edges. The surface still has to be clean and dry at application.
8) Does the Brady 3420-3 marker meet any recognized standards for a spec submittal?
It supports compliance with ASTM B 117 (salt spray), ASTM D 1000 (electrical tape test methods), ASTM D 2979 (tack), ASTM G 155 (weathering) and is UL Recognized. If the government or institutional order needs a stock number, the 3420-3 carries a National Stock Number.
9) Are these labels readable in a dim electrical room?
Black on yellow with a semi-gloss topcoat gives high contrast under a flashlight, but the marker is non-reflective and not photoluminescent. In a dark panel with the lights out you will need your own light source. For egress or glow-in-the-dark marking this is the wrong product.
10) Is the Brady 3420-3 label RoHS compliant, and does it need an SDS?
It is not EU RoHS compliant, and it does carry a California Prop 65 substance (labeling not required). No SDS is required to ship or store it, and it is not a DOT regulated product. Facilities with a strict RoHS purchasing policy should flag that before standardizing on it.
