ASC Engineered Solutions 310504204 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the ASC 3/4 x 1/2 black malleable iron 90 elbow a reducing elbow, and which end is which size?
It's a reducing 90, 3/4 inch on one end and 1/2 inch on the other, both female pipe thread. Use it where a 3/4 inch run turns and steps down to a 1/2 inch branch or drop, so you don't need a separate bushing or coupling at the turn. Threads are cut to ASME B1.20.1 NPT, so it mates with standard threaded black or galvanized steel pipe of those sizes.
2) What does XH mean on this malleable iron elbow, and can I use standard Class 150 fittings instead?
XH is extra heavy, the Class 300 pattern, with thicker walls and a higher pressure rating than a standard Class 150 fitting of the same size. Dimensions and pressure rating both follow ASME B16.3. A standard fitting will thread onto the same pipe, but it won't carry the same working pressure, so if the drawing or the system spec calls out extra heavy, a standard pattern is not a substitute.
3) Can I use a black malleable iron elbow on a domestic water line?
No. Black malleable iron is for gas, fire sprinkler, compressed air, and steam or hydronic service, not potable water, because the uncoated iron will rust. For potable water in threaded pipe, use galvanized fittings or a different material. The black finish here is the plain uncoated version.
4) What material spec does this malleable iron reducing elbow meet?
The castings are made to ASTM A-197, the standard for cupola malleable iron, with dimensions and pressure rating to ASME B16.3 and NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1. That's the combination a mechanical or plumbing submittal normally asks for on threaded iron fittings.
5) Do I need a sealant on the threads of this elbow?
Yes, threaded iron joints are sealed by the compound, not the metal. Use a pipe thread sealant or PTFE tape rated for the service, and on gas work it has to be a gas rated compound. The elbow ships with nothing included, just the fitting with FPT threads on both ends.
