1) Will a Greenlee DTAP3/8-16 drill and tap in one pass, or do I still need a separate tap?
One pass, no separate tap. The DTAP3/8-16 drills the hole, cuts 3/8-16 NC threads, then deburrs and countersinks past the back taper without pulling the bit out of the work. That is the whole point of it for panel and enclosure work, where you would otherwise drill, swap tools, and hand tap every mounting hole. It threads 16 TPI National Coarse, the standard coarse pitch for a 3/8 inch fastener.
2) How thick a piece of steel can the Greenlee 3/8-16 drill/tap bit handle?
Up to 10 gauge. That covers mild steel, copper, brass, and aluminum at that thickness or less, which is where most enclosure walls, strut, duct flange, and panel backplates land. Heavier than 10 GA and you are past what this bit taps, so plan on a drill and a separate hand or machine tap for structural plate.
3) Does the Greenlee DTAP3/8-16 fit an impact driver or does it need a drill chuck?
It has a 1/4 inch quick change hex shank, so it drops straight into a 1/4 inch hex quick change holder or a standard drill chuck. That is the same shank format as a hex bit holder on a cordless driver, which is why electricians like these for overhead enclosure work, no chuck key and no re-centering between holes.
4) What size bolt does a 3/8-16 tapped hole take, and is it the right thread for strut and enclosure hardware?
A hole cut with this bit accepts a 3/8-16 fastener, the coarse thread used for 3/8 inch bolts and all-thread rod. 3/8-16 is the standard coarse series for that diameter, so it mates with off the shelf 3/8 inch hex bolts, threaded rod, and hanger hardware. If your drawing calls for 3/8-24 fine thread, this is the wrong bit.
5) Will this bit start a hole on sheet metal without a center punch?
The point is a split point with web thinning, which is the geometry that keeps a bit from walking on a smooth panel face and cuts the thrust you have to lean on it with. On thin gauge sheet you can generally start it clean without punching first. On a slick coated or curved surface a punch mark is still the safer habit.
6) Can I over-drill and strip the threads with a drill/tap bit?
The DTAP3/8-16 is back tapered specifically so running past depth does not chew the threads you just cut. Beyond the back taper the bit deburrs and countersinks instead. You still control feed, but the design tolerates the depth overshoot that ruins threads with a straight tap.
