ASC Engineered Solutions 3/8X3/8X1/4 XH BLK MI TEE

It's a reducing tee: two 3/8 inch runs and a 1/4 inch branch, all female pipe thread (FPT) on every opening. So you can carry 3/8 inch pipe straight through and take a 1/4 inch drop off the branch without adding a separate bushing.

XH is extra heavy, a thicker wall and a higher pressure rating than a standard (150) malleable fitting of the same size. ASC's 310519202 is an XH fitting rated per ASME B16.3. Use XH where the line pressure or mechanical abuse on the joint exceeds what a standard 150 class fitting covers; for ordinary low pressure gas or air runs, a standard 150 black tee is the usual call.

The 310519202 carries UL/FM recognition. For sprinkler work the fitting also needs to match your approved system drawing on size and class, and black malleable iron is a wet or dry pipe fitting, not for use in corrosive or outdoor exposed conditions without protection.

Black malleable iron is the wrong finish for potable or open water service, it will rust. Black fittings are used for gas, air, oil, and closed sprinkler or steam piping. For water, galvanized malleable iron or a copper, brass, or CPVC fitting is the correct choice. This particular tee is a black finish fitting.

Three specs cover it: the iron is ASTM A-197 malleable, the dimensions and pressure class follow ASME B16.3, and the threads follow ASME B1.20.1. That's the set most commercial mechanical submittals ask for on a threaded malleable fitting.

Yes, as long as what's in the line is also a B16.3 threaded malleable fitting. B16.3 fixes center-to-end dimensions by size and class, so a 3/8 x 3/8 x 1/4 extra heavy tee from any B16.3 maker takes up the same space and your existing nipple lengths stay the same. Note that an XH fitting has a larger outside body than a class 150, so check clearance if you are swapping a standard tee for this one.
