3M 35-1/2X20FT-BL – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can 3M Scotch 35 color coding tape be used as primary insulation, or is it only for marking?
Scotch 35 vinyl tape is rated 600V, so it will insulate and protect low voltage splices, but on high voltage work it is for marking only. For phase identification, color-coding motor leads, banding piping and marking safety areas it is doing exactly the job it was made for.
2) What colors does Scotch 35 come in for phase taping a 1/2 inch roll?
Seven colors on the 1/2 in x 20 ft roll: blue, brown, green, gray, red, white and yellow. That covers brown/orange-free 480V phase schemes using brown, and black/red/blue 208V work using red and blue, plus gray and white for neutral marking and green for ground.
3) How hot can Scotch 35 electrical tape get before it fails?
Operating range is 32 to 221 degrees F (0 to 105 degrees C). That is fine inside motor terminal boxes, panels and conduit runs, but it is not a tape for taping to steam lines or anything that runs above 105 C.
4) Will this tape hold up outdoors or in a wet vault?
The PVC backing is UV resistant and the tape resists moisture, abrasion, alkalis, solvents and many acids, so it holds color outdoors and in damp vaults. It is also flame retardant. Note it is not self-extinguishing rated and it is not a self-fusing rubber tape, so for weather sealing a splice you still want a rubber splicing tape underneath it.
5) How well does Scotch 35 stick and stretch when I wrap it around a lug or a small conductor?
Adhesion to steel is 20 oz/in (2.2 N/cm) from a rubber resin pressure sensitive adhesive, with 225 percent elongation and 17 lb/in breaking strength. It conforms tightly around lugs, irregular connectors and small-gauge conductors without tearing, and it stays put on painted metal and conduit.
6) What is the dielectric strength of Scotch 35 vinyl tape?
1250 V/mil, with insulation resistance greater than 10^6 megohms. That is what backs the 600V rating for low voltage insulating and jacketing work up to 600 V.
7) How long can I keep Scotch 35 tape on the shelf in my stockroom?
Shelf life is 5 years, so a facility or MRO crib can stock a full color range without worrying about rotation. Rolls are made in the USA.
8) How are the 1/2 inch Scotch 35 rolls packed for a bulk order?
Packed 10 rolls per carton and 100 rolls per case, per color. Ordering by color lets you stock a single-color case for a standardized phase scheme instead of breaking mixed packs.
