The DT8 uses an aggressive synthetic rubber adhesive that grabs instantly on metal, glass, plastic and sealed concrete, and hanging polyethylene drapes is one of the applications 3M calls out for it. That combination is what makes it the tape crews reach for when they're closing off a work area with poly and taping the edges down to a slab.

Application goes down to 40 degrees F. Once it's on, DT8 handles up to 130 degrees F for as long as 30 minutes, so it is a short-duration heat exposure rating, not a continuous one. For an unheated building in winter, 40 F is the floor: below that the adhesive won't grab the way it should.

DT8 is the most stretchable tape in 3M's duct tape family, and that conformability is the reason to pick it over a stiffer cloth tape when you're wrapping something round. Securing conduit ends and capping pipe are both listed uses. The tradeoff is that a stretchier backing is what you want on contours, and a flatter, less conformable tape is the one for straight seam work.

Bundling is one of its stated jobs. DT8 is built on a tightly woven scrim that gives it high tensile strength, with a polyethylene film laminated to cloth over a synthetic rubber adhesive. The 8 mil build is a mid-weight duct tape, so it handles bundling and reinforcing, and heavy load-bearing or long-term structural holding is not what any duct tape is for.

DT8 is rated only for protecting against light sandblast overspray, which is drift and stray media at the edge of the work, not the direct blast stream. Point a nozzle at it and the abrasive will cut through. For masking directly in the blast path you want a purpose-made heavy abrasive-blast stencil tape instead.

It tears clean by hand, in both directions, and 3M specifically notes it resists curling and comes off the roll cleanly on rough jobs. The unwind is consistent too, which is the difference between a roll you can work one-handed off a ladder and one that fights you. No blade needed for straight cuts.

Silver only. 3M builds DT8 exclusively in silver, so if a job needs color coding by trade or by circuit, DT8 won't do it and you'd want a colored cloth tape for the marking and DT8 for the work. Labeling and marking are still listed applications, just in the one color.

Temporary repair is how 3M lists it, alongside patching, reinforcing, sealing and splicing insulation. Treat DT8 as the tape that holds a job together until the permanent fix goes in, or as the finish on things like insulation seams and bundled runs where a cloth tape is the accepted method.
