3M 7000005950 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What cable diameters does the 3M 8428-12 cold shrink tube cover?
The 8428 series cold shrink insulator goes on at an inside diameter of 1.937 in (49.2 mm) and recovers down to 0.949 in (24.1 mm). Anything in the substrate you are covering has to fall inside that window: larger than about 0.949 in so the rubber grips it under tension, and smaller than 1.937 in so it slides over in the first place.
2) Will a 12 inch cold shrink insulator cover my compression lug barrel?
The tube relaxes to 12.0 in (304.8 mm) long and is rated for connectors up to 8.0 in (203.2 mm) of barrel length, which leaves roughly two inches of overlap onto the cable insulation at each end. If your long barrel splice or lug is longer than 8 inches, step up to a longer tube rather than trying to stretch this one.
3) What voltage is the 3M 8428 cold shrink insulator rated for?
It is a low voltage product, rated 1 kV, intended for primary insulation of solid dielectric insulated wire and cable splices up to 1000 volts. It is not a medium voltage splice body, so do not use it on 5 kV, 15 kV or 35 kV shielded cable.
4) Do I need a heat gun or torch to install this?
No flame and no tools. Cold shrink means the EPDM tube is factory expanded onto a removable core; you position it and pull the core out, and the rubber contracts onto the connector on its own. That makes it usable in vaults, manholes and other spots where an open flame is not allowed and where a heat shrink tube would be awkward to work around energized gear.
5) Does the 3M 8428 insulator replace the connector, or do I still need a splice barrel?
It is the insulating and sealing cover only, not the electrical connection. You still make the joint with a compression splice, for example a Burndy Hylink long barrel copper compression splice, then cover the finished barrel with the cold shrink tube. Match the tube's 8 inch maximum connector length against whatever barrel you choose.
6) Can I use this cold shrink insulator outdoors or in a cold climate?
Service range is -40 to 90 C (-40 to 194 F), so it holds up in outdoor pad and pole applications and in freezer or cold storage environments. The EPDM rubber contains no chlorides or sulfur, which is why it is used against bare metal barrels without corrosion concerns.
7) Besides splices, what else can the 8428 tube be used to seal?
Three jobs beyond straight splice insulation: sealing terminal lug barrels, sealing conduit couplings, and covering conduit-to-cable breakouts. The catalogued application is insulation, mechanical protection and repair, so it also works as a jacket repair sleeve on damaged single conductor power cable.
8) Is the 3M 8428-12 sized for one conductor or a multi-conductor cable?
One conductor. It is specified for single conductor power cable, aluminum conductor, up to 800 kcmil (400 mm2). For a three conductor run you use one tube per phase.
9) What is the difference between 3M 8428-12 and 8428-12P?
Same 12 inch cold shrink insulator; the P suffix is the point of purchase packaged version, sold 10 per case, MPN 7000132745. The plain 8428-12 carries MPN 7000005950. Order the P version if you want the retail carded pack, otherwise the specs are identical.
10) Is the 3M cold shrink insulator RoHS compliant and halogen free?
RoHS 2011/65/EU compliant without exemption. It is not halogen free, so if your facility spec calls for low smoke zero halogen materials this one will not meet it. Country of origin is the United States.
