4) Do I need wire mesh or a retaining screen with 3M FB369 pillows?
No wire mesh is required. That is the main labor difference versus older pillow systems, and it is why installation, inspection, removal and reinstallation are quick. Nothing else is included in the case, so any framing or sleeving at the opening is separate.
5) Should I use firestop pillows or a firestop sealant for a through-penetration?
Use pillows where the penetration will change. Cable trays, communications risers and temporary or phased openings get re-entered constantly, and the FB369 pillow pulls out and repacks with no cutting. Use a caulk, putty or mortar system for a penetration that is finished and will not be disturbed, or where you need a water-tight seal, since the FB369 is not water tight.
6) How do 3M fire barrier pillows actually stop flame and smoke from passing?
On heat the pillow intumesces, expanding to form a hard char that closes off the gaps around the penetrants and seals against flame spread, smoke and toxic gases. Because it seals by expansion rather than by a rigid cast fill, it also copes with cables of mixed diameters in the same opening.
7) Are the FB369 pillows suitable for a retrofit in an occupied commercial building?
Yes, they are intended for commercial construction and are listed as suitable for new or retrofit installations.
