Thomas & Betts 3996 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size ground wire will the Thomas & Betts 3996 lug accept?
Its lug takes conductors from #6 through 4/0, which covers the usual equipment grounding and bonding jumper sizes run with 4 inch conduit.
2) If the conduit is already terminated and I cannot get a bushing over the threads, what grounding bushing should I use instead of the 3996?
Use a split-style bushing. The Bridgeport Fittings SGBS-388CL Mighty-Rite is an insulated split grounding bushing in 3 inch trade size, steel with an aluminum lug, and the split body lets it go onto conduit that is already made up rather than requiring the bushing to be threaded on from the end. The Thomas & Betts 3996 is a one-piece 4 inch insulated grounding bushing, so it has to be installed on an accessible thread. Note the Bridgeport unit is 3 inch, so it is a substitute only if your raceway is 3 inch.
3) Is the Thomas & Betts 3996 bushing metal or plastic?
The body is malleable iron with an insulated throat. The iron body is what lets it carry the bonding path, while the insulating liner protects conductor insulation where the wires turn out of the conduit.
4) Do I need an insulated grounding bushing or just a plain insulated bushing on a 4 inch conduit?
If you only need to protect the conductors at the conduit end, a plain insulated bushing is enough. The 3996 adds a lug so you can land a bonding jumper and tie the raceway into the grounding system, which is what you want on service raceways, concentric or eccentric knockouts, and anywhere the conduit cannot be relied on as the bonding path.
