ASC Engineered Solutions 310012000 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the ASC 4 x 3 black malleable iron 90 degree elbow a reducing fitting, and which end is which?
It's a reducing elbow: one end is 4 inch and the other is 3 inch, both female pipe thread (FPT). So it turns 90 degrees and steps the line down (or up) in a single fitting instead of needing a separate bushing or reducer. Both ends take male threaded pipe nipples or threaded pipe ends.
2) Is this ASC 4x3 elbow approved for fire sprinkler piping?
It carries UL/FM approval, which is what a sprinkler contractor needs for fittings in a listed fire protection system. It's a black (uncoated) malleable iron fitting, standard pattern, made to ASME B16.3 for dimensions and pressure rating.
3) Can I use a black malleable iron elbow on a potable water line?
No. Black malleable iron is for gas, fire protection, steam, air and similar non-potable service. Black fittings have no protective coating and will rust in wet potable service. For water lines you want galvanized malleable iron, copper, or CPVC instead. This one is finished black and built to ASTM A-197 malleable iron.
4) Is this a standard pattern or extra heavy 4x3 malleable elbow?
Standard (STD) pattern. That's the common 150-class malleable iron weight dimensioned to ASME B16.3. If your drawing calls for extra heavy or 300-class fittings, this isn't the right part.
5) Can I use this reducing elbow on a grooved or welded system?
No. Both ends are female tapered pipe thread, so it only joins threaded pipe. A grooved system needs a grooved reducing elbow with couplings, and a welded system needs a butt weld reducing ell. For threaded black iron runs, this one drops straight in.
