Metallics M591189BL – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size cable does the Metallics M591189BL insulated staple take?
The M591189BL is a 5/16 x 5/16 inch insulated staple, so the crown opening is 5/16 inch square. That sizing suits cable or small wire runs that measure up to 5/16 inch across the jacket. Anything larger than 5/16 inch will not seat under the crown without crushing the insulation, so step up to a wider staple for bigger cable.
2) What does the insulation on an insulated cable staple actually do for me on the job?
The insulated portion sits between the metal staple and the cable jacket, so when you drive it home the staple bears on the insulator rather than biting straight into the jacket. That is what keeps you from nicking conductors on a low-voltage or NM run. The M591189BL is the 5/16 x 5/16 inch black version of that style.
3) Should I use an insulated staple or a cable clamp for securing low-voltage cable?
An insulated staple like the 5/16 x 5/16 inch M591189BL is the fast choice for securing cable to wood framing or studs, driven with a hammer, one fastener per point. A screw-on clamp or strap is the better pick when you need to fasten to masonry or metal, when you want to remove and re-dress the cable later, or when the run is large enough that a 5/16 inch crown will not clear it.
4) Is the Metallics M591189BL staple black, and will it blend with black cable?
Black is the only color it comes in. The M591189BL is a black insulated staple, which keeps it from standing out against black-jacketed cable or dark trim on exposed runs. There is a single model on the staple, so black is what you get.
5) Is the Metallics M591189BL an electrical fastener or a general construction staple?
It is an electrical fastener. The M591189BL is a black insulated cable staple in 5/16 x 5/16 inch, carried as electrical material rather than a general-purpose framing staple, and the insulator is there specifically to protect cable jacket.
