Metallics JFMP91 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 6-32 x 3 in. machine screw thread into a standard electrical device box or plaster ring?
Yes. The Metallics JFMP91 is a 6-32 UNC thread, 32 threads per inch, cut to the ANSI/ASME B1.1 thread standard, which is the same 6-32 machine thread used on device box and plaster ring mounting holes. At 3 inches long it is the extension length you reach for when a receptacle or switch has to pull forward through thick tile, stone, or stacked mud rings rather than sit flush in the box.
2) Will a flat head 6-32 screw sit flush, or does it stand above the surface?
Flat head means countersunk, so it finishes flush in a chamfered or countersunk hole. The head measures 0.285 to 0.312 in. across with a head height of 0.084 to 0.1 in., built to ASME B18.6.3-1998. On a flat, uncountersunk plate the head will stand proud by that head height, so if you need a flush finish on sheet metal you need the hole countersunk or you should use a pan or oval head instead.
3) How much load will a 6-32 steel zinc machine screw take?
850 lb minimum tensile on the JFMP91, with a hardness of Rockwell B70-B100 and steel to AISI 1006-1022. That is low carbon steel, fine for device mounting, cover plates, enclosure hardware, and light bracketry. It is not a graded structural fastener, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls out a bolt grade or a specific proof load.
4) Is zinc plated steel okay for outdoor or damp locations?
The JFMP91 is zinc plated carbon steel, which is a mild indoor corrosion coating. It holds up in dry interior work, panels, and electronics assembly, but in wet locations, exterior boxes, coastal air, or washdown areas the plating will eventually give way and the steel will rust. For those conditions specify a stainless machine screw of the same 6-32 x 3 in. size instead.
5) Do these Metallics machine screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
The JFMP91 is flagged compliant for both ARRA and Buy American in the product record, with country of origin China. On a federally funded job, confirm which clause your contract actually invokes, since the compliance flag and the origin need to be read together for your specific spec.
6) Is a 6-32 x 3 in. machine screw the same thing as a wood or sheet metal screw?
No. A machine screw like the JFMP91 has a uniform straight machine thread, 6-32 UNC, meant to engage a tapped hole or a nut. It will not cut its own thread in wood or thin sheet metal the way a tapping screw does. If you are fastening into an untapped material, you need a self tapping or sheet metal screw, or you need to tap the hole for 6-32 first.
7) How many screws come in a jar of Metallics JFMP91?
They ship 100 to a jar, and 100 count is the order minimum, so a jar is the smallest buy. Jar weight is 1.42 lbs. For MRO stock on a multi-family or institutional truck, that is a reasonable single-bin quantity of a size you only need occasionally.
